BUMP KEY - Filing Question

Postby nworbmit » 16 Nov 2006 2:14

Hi
I'm new to lockpicking.
I just purchased a set of Bump Keys and
and getting ready to file the tip and the shoulder.
I have a digital Calipers and would like to
file them all removing the correct amount of metal.
What works the best in practice?
How much should I file off?
Thanks

Enough so that if you push the key in further it will hit the back of the lock :P

You don't need to be precise, 3-4 mm in general does it.

I think most say 0.5 to 1 mm. I would start by taking off a small amount, you can always take off more, but you can't put back if you take off too much.
Try doing some searching, you should find a lot of info on bump keys.

Go have duplicates made of your keys before you do any filing. Keep the originals in a safe place and always modify the duplicates.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!
