Welcome everybody,
For all thoes new to the site and lockpicking, LP101 is a great place to start.
Take a look at the new users section, first and don't be afraid to ask any questions just remember to try a search before posting.
If you're looking for locks to pick, buy some but, DO NOT PICK LOCKS YOU RELY ON
I repeat DO NOT PICK LOCKS YOU RELY ON, they can and will break, then your house/car/safe/chasity belt is vulnerable or unable to be opened (think: emergency situation).
Cheers,
UWSDWF

UW... has the right idea. If you're into picking, you're going to have to start by doing a lot of reading (just asking questions will get you pointed back to the reading or, if you're really lucky, a long answer which will require a lot of reading but will be ultimately incomplete if you haven't done the other reading yet).
But to answer the question, I believe my set cost $17 and it has done beautifully (SouthOrd 11 piece set). Just make sure the laws in your country or state allow for private ownership of lockpicks.

You could search around here and find some scaled templates to make you own picks. Use a common hacksaw blade for the pick material. Just follow the tutorials you find on site and you will get very nice picks......

I guess you could make some picks, but it will really be cheaper to buy a 5 piece set from Southord. Then again, if you are feeling adventurous, you will learn a lot by making your own picks.
It's really up to you. A cheap grinder and several hacksaw blades will get you on your way, as will simply ordering a small set online.
At any rate, I wouldn't personaly advise you to get a set bigger than 9 pieces, since most of bigger sets won't really give a newbie any great pay-offs.
My oppinion? Get a 9 piece Southord Slimline set. Why? Because it gives you enough picks to open a huge number of locks, gives you two turning tools, and comes at a very affordable price.
Hey, it's up to you mate, either choice will be great.
Keep us posted on your progress, won't ya?

I would say, when you're just starting out to order a small set. If you get into it buy a cheap grinder (I've seen one for $9.99 which is just right for making picks). You can also get a box of 100 hacksaw blades for $4. While this isn't a lot of money (keep in mind you can probably get 3 picks out of each blade) for what you're getting, you need to think about the fact that you might not even like it. But, if you already have a grinder, go buy some hacksaw blades at Home Depot or something and make a few picks.
