New Impressioning Technique?

Postby Exodus5000 » 16 Nov 2006 23:22

I mentioned this a little while back, but I got to thinking again and modified my idea slightly.

What if someone wanted to create a key for a lock, lets say a run of the mill schlage SC1. Instead of going through and impressioning a key normaly 1 pin stack at a time, why not create a set of 10 keys that are cut to code in all 10 positions. So you have one key thats 000, the next is 111, the next is 222, all the way up to a 999 key. You would then smoke these keys (or apply some other coating.)

By working through all 10 sets of keys and recording how each pin stack "rubs away" the smoking on each key, shouldn't you be able to derive a key for that lock in a relatively short amount of time?

I had considered that at one time, never got around to trying it. I think that it may require a few extra decoding skills. There will be a few things to look out for such as, when a longer pin is half way across the shear line it may take all the preasure off a short pin that should be marking.

Sounds like a heck of alot of work involved, especially when impressioning is much faster and consequently much cheaper (labour) alternative.

There is a known locksmith method called progressioning...but that is something better left to the advanced forums...sorry.

I like your thinking but!

depth keys

Postby raimundo » 17 Nov 2006 12:04

depth keys are usefull, would get sets for the keyways that you would need them most for, they were the code cutting solution before code machines you know. old impressioning is still useful for those keyways that you don't want to get a set of depth keys for. try some black markers, either the stinky kind or the waterbased ones.
