Home made Rake Pick

Postby Lauren » 18 Nov 2006 18:46

I saw a rather long clip on Youtube on how to make your own lock picks from hack saw blades. Dremel has a new 1 1/2 metal cutting disk with their so-called EZ-Lock shaft that I thought would be cutting edge. I bought the set, a couple of bi-metal white painted hack saw blades, Lenox brand, and a three inch grinding stone for my drill press. The white blades are awsome because I was able to trace the majority of a factory made lock pick with a needle, etching away the paint, so the contrast is perfect.

The reason for attempting to make my own pick was because I wanted to have a rake pick that was longer in pattern, unlike the conventional 2 wave design. I wanted a 4 wave.

I'm so happy with the results. The rake that I made has a nice feel to it, and the thickness of the hack saw material is excellent, along with good flexablity. I was able to pick a Master No. 5 and No 3 (both 4 pin locks) in seconds.

The investment cost about twenty dollars in materials. Always remember to constantly dip the pick blank (hack saw blade) in water so you don't change the temper of the metal. I would highly recommend making your picks to anyone. :D

Congratulations it sounds like you did an excellent job on the rake.

Hopefully Romstar will catch this thread. I made my first picks out of bi-metal blades, and I do love them, but they're not the best material for the job. He was the one who explained it to me, and I believe he suggested a different type of blade as well.

Nice work on your first picks. Mine sucked :P but with enough refinement they finally opened some locks. :)

Yeah, I caught it. What am I supposed to do, rain all over his parade?

No, bi-metal blades are not the best thing for making picks, because all the hard metal is in the teeth.

If they work so far for him though, it's what he has.

Lauren,

I do recomend that you buy just plain old hacksaw blades next time. Buy some different ones, and you will find the ones that suit you best.

For now though, if it works, go for it.

P.S. We would love to see some pictures.

I remember my first pick, it was a half diamond and I had to back out to the garage to grind away six times because it was too big. That worked alright, then I made a falle style hook, that one was very good, great feedback for only having about a 1.25 inch handle.

Hehe, I had hoped I tempered my statements with enough optimism, much like you had when I first presented my picks :)
