Can anyone cut VOLVO keys???

I recently lost a key to my 1995 volvo 850. I then only had one key and no spare. I wanted a spare so i went to get it copied. I went to 2 reputable locksmiths and NEITHER of them could cut the key. they both tried several times but could not do it. I ended up having to go to the dealership and order one for a price of 70 dollers(steep eh) Im just wondering if any of the many skilled people have the skills to cut a key like that. The key has cuts on both sides that are cut halfway through the width of the blade. one cut on the top of the key, and one cut on the bottom of the other side. Just wondering if any of you could have cut it...

p.s. I know auto locks are for advanced only but im not asking how to open it, just if its possibly to copy these keys outside of the factory.

Yes they can but they need a differant key machine than normal hence why your other lockies couldnt cut them,

Thats a 2 track "laser cut" key.

There aren't a lot of shops that have a machine that cuts those keys, and even less who have the ability to do it by code.

Yours is pretty basic, but still requires the special machine.

$70.00 is a bit steep, I don't see any notes on a transponder, so it likely doesn't have one. I would say about $45.00 - $55.00 is usual for that key.

I've seen others go for as much as $400.00 just for a new transponder key. Consider yourself lucky.

i see keys a lot at work, i make pizza, but i see customers put their keys on the counter and always notice the types of keys, the brand, the pin numbers, the cut, etc.

i see that almost always its the VW's and the Volkswagons that do the laser key thing. it always looks trippy to me, but i still like the look.

Normally I'd scrap this, but the idea of a Canadian using sophisticated techniques to steal a 10 year old Volvo is just too hilarious to me.

Nobody steals a 10 year old volvo, unless the keys are in the ignition, and they really need a car, or they need parts.

A couple of guys got busted a few weeks ago while they were on a shopping spree at "midnight auto".

They were stealing rims and tires from auto dealerships, and actually had the balls to go back to a pace they already hit.

Some people are either as stupid as they come, or have big brass ones the size of cantelope.

In any case, they are now in very, very deep kimchee.

Yup, usually get at least one Volvo at the auction each week that needs keys cut.

Im not sure exactly what blanks or machines they used. They both tried twice to cut it before telling me they were sorry. I imagine they used a regular machine, but adjusted it so the cuts would only go halfway through the width of the key.

go to junk yard.

find the a similar year 850, pull the ignition, door locks and trunk lock.

parts will probably run you ~20$US at worst.

failing that, go to a volvo dealer, they probably have a try set of keys that they can get you a new set from.

i can't imagine any locksmith thinking they could use a regular cutter on an engraving key, and i can't see why they would have engraving key blanks if they didn't have the right machine either.

you should be able to order keys from the dealer though.

Volvo dealers do NOT have try out sets of keys.

They order them cut by code from VIN number. If they are not correct when they come in, you just bought yourself a shiney set of keys that were supposed to fit your car. Their only other option is to sell you a new set of locks.

Find a locksmith that does a lot of automotive work and have them cut you a new key. You might try visiting some of the upscale dealer lots (check with service manager) and finding out who they use for a locksmith. Usually the auto pro's that only do dealer/auction work are not in the book.

i already got the key. I had to order it from the dealership for 70 dollars. They do order it from the vin number, so make sure you write it down correctly
