You can go to a hardware store and buy a Micrometer, it gives measurements to the .0005 of an inch.

Most people that do these for a living go with a .003 because you can get as close as .0015 to the correct size if it is not actually know what size it should be.
With a .005, you can be as far as .0025 off, almost the full distance as the next pin size in a .003 kit.
You would not run into it very much, but when you do, you will wish you had the .003 when you are filing a pin down to the plug.

Most locksmiths prefer Lab, but Specialty Products are about half price and just as good IMHO.

The .003 kit is certainly not real new, but the .005 does still work well. Every lockie I know in this city uses .005 ( including me )

I prefer LAB, no matter what. I used to use an ESP kit, .005 but now I carry a LAB .005 semi-pro in the car, and have the LAB .003 Emerald Wedge kit in the shop.
One of these days I may get a LAB woodie kit just because I always wanted one. Otherwise, any of their larger kits will last you a long time.
They just seem to be better all the way around.
Good luck,

You can re-pin a whol lot of locks with the regualr .003 kit. I would recomend getting an A2 IC core kit if you are doing any BEST or similar locks.

Thanks..then that's what I'll get as a base kit and build on that.
I should have asked this question in my previous post.
What locks do the .005 kit cover?

The .005 kit covers the same locks. The .003 kit just allows you to get that much closer to spec.
I generally don't recomend the .005 kit anymore because the prices are so similar.

I ordered this today: http://clksupplies.com/shop/product_inf ... cts_id=109
The guy was really cool. I emailed him some questions and he emailed me back letting me know he was going to raise the prce of the set, but he would hold off until I placed my order. He kept his promise. Make sure to mention lockpicking101.com if you place an order.

I work with Schlage more than with other brands, and I notice their pinning works very well with .005 multiples. I would like to have a Universal kit, but I'm wondering if a .005 LAB kit would be better since my Schlages match those specs, or are the .003 pins forgiving enough to work for most situations with Schlage?
thanks,
