Can pick to lock, but not to unlock...

Postby numeroquatro » 27 Nov 2006 23:22

Hello,

I have been picking my first lock, a five pin deadbolt with ease. I move the pins around and it still doesn't give me any trouble.

The problem is that this second lock I am working on only lets me pick it CW ( to lock ). The lock can start out locked or unlocked, but I can only pick it in the lock direction. This is probably operator error, but I thought I would ask the forum just in case.

The key has KW1 on it.
It is a door knob.
The key turns 90 degrees CCW to lock and 90 degree CW to lock.

Thanks!

A plug spinner is the cure for the problem you are having with the key in knob set you are trying to pick.

If you find you can only pick to the locked position, you then wind up the spinner, insert it into the lock, and trigger it. It flips the plug so fast past the shear line that it doesn't have time to re-lock.

The plug is now on the open side, and you can then unlock it.

Shoot a little Tri-Flo or WD40 in the lock, run the key in and out several times to get the lube throughout the cylinder and pins, then pick again without as much tension.

if you want to be able to pick it, remember the order in with you pick each chamber, now when you try to pick it in the other direction reverse the order.
also you should try get a hook pick, it will be alot easier to feel the pins and depending on the size of pins, you might not be able to pick them with out a hook pick

plug spinner... and if you search for shrup as a keyword you can find a post where shrub explained to me how to use a rubber band a plug spinner...

also try different types of picks to ensure you can single pin pic each without any hangups....

Can't go wrong with a plug spinner in your arsenal of tools, they come in handy from time to time. Even if it's a homemade one like T-Shocks, it works and only takes a few minuts to make.

Numeroquatro,

it's what everyone else said already.
the other way is just different.

I'd hold off on the WD40 if i were you... it seems like it picks fine without it.

A very easy to make and quick plug spinner is t-shock's.
It's found here:

my opinion on bumping , there is very little skill required and its only for people to feel special and say they opened a lock, in my 5 and a half years of locksmithing i have never had to bump a lock and neither has anyone i know,
