Un-Cuttable Lock

Un-Cuttable Lock

Postby Digital » 29 Nov 2006 0:12

I've tried searching for this but I havent been able to find a front door style lock that is "un cuttable".

Now I know that anything can be cut but I ask this because my friend has a brother that likes to steal his key and make copys. Making the "hard to pick" locks fairly pointless in this case. So are there any locks that have keys that most locksmiths wont be able to cut?

Thanks for your time.

Medeco, Abloy, Mul-t-Lock, just to name a few...

Try searching for restricted key profiles instead of uncuttable keys.

Most security locks will have specialized keys and control the availability of blanks. My medeco lock came with a card that I send in to the company to get new keys made (and it has to be signed by me). Medecos are available on ebay and the like for a good deal less than you'll find them through normal channels.

Alternatively, you could engrave on the key 'do not copy'. If it's well placed, it'll be hard for the locky to ignore, and most key-cutters will respect that sort of a thing.

Few choices and problems.

The preferred choice would be to visit a local locksmith and purchase a knoblock (or lever) with a restricted keyway, then carry it home and put it on.

Second would be to watch ebay for used knob or lever locks that already have a restricted keyway cylinder installed. Buy it and install it when it comes in.

If you purchase from ebay, you will have an issue with getting any duplicate keys made if you ever need one.

Another issue is most residential door locks have a 2-3/8" backset while commercial locks use a 2-3/4" backset. Most residentail locks will not accept a restricted keyway cylinder. In other words, you might have to cut the door to put it on.

Thanks for all the replys.
I ended up getting a electronic touchpad lock for him.
I figured that it would reduce the urge for him to steal my buddys key outright since there is none.
