an idea to cause less damge when bumping

Postby subnoizchild024 » 30 Nov 2006 1:00

after u bump a lock and look at the plug its ussal dented or dimpled. so in physics if pressure = force over area (P=F/A) the more area of contact u give the object the less force is apied to that area. so if you were able to put some bar of metal on the key like the diagram it shouldnt dent the plug because there would be less force per square mm of metal.

anyone else think it would work?

The landing won't be dented deeply but there will be a lesser horizontal dent running across the barrel/plug if you use a metal bar. Also, if the pressure is to be distributed evenly the bar would have to be almost perfectly perpendicular to the key blade else you will dislodge the bar and/or mark the face of the lock elsewhere.

Some TOOOL members remove the shoulders completely and replace them with a lump of hot glue material. The glue is elastic so it acts like a cushion. I thought to use a tight fitting rubber grommet attached using any elastic adhesive (one that won't crack when crushed).

Cut the shoulder back, and add a piece of felt with some good glue.

You will have to maintain this as the felt is prone to coming off.

However, the material is excellent at absorbing impact, and distributing energy.

If you drink enough wine you will have an ample supply of load spreaders for your bump keys. In fact the more contemporary vintners are using plastic bump key collars that give a great bounce back!

I've also seen people cut a slot in the center of a bottle cap and insert the key through the cap from the inside out so that the top of the bottle cap sits where you would want the shoulder to be and then fill the entire inside of the bottle cap with hot glue to affix everything together permanently. this should distribute the pressure evenly all the way around so that no mark is made.
