ABUS 83/45 has spools or mushrooms?

Does anybody know whether the Abus 83/45 has any spools or mushrooms? Abus's website doesn't say one way or the other.

That would explain why I smiled and thought, "nice, big keyway with big pins and smooth operation, great beginner's practice lock" but then quickly began to frown when I started trying to pick it.

I'll set it aside for now, but at least now I know one of my future challenges.

Is the 83/45 standardized as to exactly which pins are spools (or are they all spools), or does this vary among the individual locks? It would be helpful to play with a lock while knowing in advance which of the pins I'm feeling are cylinders and which are spools.
I guess I should go learn how to take it apart.

Nice big keyway? Uh... My 83/45's keyway was anything but nice. There's a pic somewhere on my pc, if I find it i'll post it. What country are you in?

I have 4 ABUS locks and have seen 2 cutwaways at a local shop. The first pin is always a normal pin. All others are security. The Diskus has mushrooms instead of spools.

Take it apart, that was how I learned to pick abus locks. Really easy to take the cylinder out. Don't bother putting it back into the padlock once you're done, since you can do the picking on the cylinder right away and it saves time.

I suppose I should just give up now if I can't even count the pins correctly!

As for the big keyway, I guess my judgement is biased by the annoying little mini-padlocks I've been playing with.

You may be right, yours might have 5 pins.

Pin Tumbler Security, 5 or 6 pin.

Look at the key and you'll see how many pins it's got.

the abus 83/45 is sold with many different keyways. i have seen several different ones: arrow (ar1), dexter (de6), kwikset (kw1/kw5/kw10), schlage (sc1/sc4), weiser (wr5) and yale (y1/y2) being the most common.

so don't sell the 83/45 short. you can vary the perceived difficulty of the lock just by popping in a new cylinder.
