Jammed Lock?

Hey,

I was picking my deadbolt with a newly made pick, made from a pair of scissors. I believe that some extra metal dust got jammed inside. When i opened the lock i cleaned it out with que tips and even tryed a magnet to get any dust. When i got it back together i needed to apply alot of tension to get the pins to bind. Is there anyway to fix this or any types of oils (wd40?) that will not ruin or rust the lock?

I did search this and i couldn't find it so if this is a double post dont get all mad and stuff.

Any Ideas Will Help!

Don't use wd40, it gums up after time.

Try a graphite dust or spray silicone, you can get either at a hardware store.

I suppose you could use some motor oil, but I think youd be better off with silicone or graphite. I dunno what motor oil would do after time.

I'm pretty sure a magnet would be useless,as the pins nd therfore the pin dust are brass (non magnetic....).

If you want to clean it out soak it in kerosene, then give it a scrub ith a small toothbrush inside, that should remove and gunk or grit.

I wasnt using the magnet to get the pins, I was using it to remove the dust from the grinded scissors in which I made a pick out of.

In one of the guides I read it said use graphite or lead to loosen the pins up, I tryed that with another lock and it didn't help much, but i might be doing it wrong.

i use alot of gt85 or 3 in 1 oil and seems to the job,

theres also assa lock spray but may be hard for you to get hold of and not really needed

i say tear the lock down, give it a good cleaning in some kerosene or lighter fluid then put it back together and give it a shot of silicon spray lube.

cleaning and lubricating a lock seems to be one of those "holy war" things that people have strong opinions about. each person has their own preferred method of cleaning and lubricating a lock. and frankly, they all have their merits. having said that, here's what i would recommend...

personally, i use tri-flow cleaner/degreaser followed up with a healthy squirt of tri-flow lubricant. yes, yes. i know this sounds like an ad, but it is really good stuff.

Yea Tri-flow is great. I use the gel and aerosol version of it .... By the way is it me or is the smell of this product unique in a good way...i love its smell

Did you take it completely apart? if so maybe you tightened the back end too much? (thats assuming that you cant turn your plug enough...)

I cleaned the lock out with alchahol and then I oiled it with kerosene.
