I just Picked a master lock no.140

Postby BazookaMedic » 2 Dec 2006 16:42

Well on my tenth attempt, i finally picked it. I wish i had a camera to take pictures with. I had to use lighter tension than i was using and that was the only problem. I thought it was luck so I tried it again with the same tension. I have picked it 5 times in the last minute or two. I belive a no.140 has two? security pins in them. Mine is 2years old so if anyone caould give me some insight on exactly what dificulty level this lock was.

What I Learned: Tension is Everything in lockpicking. It is not the pick that opens the lock, it is the tension wrench.

Do not get mad at your lock. If you are mad you can not visulize what is going on inside of the lock.

Well I was using a half-diamond and a standard "twisty" tension wrench. I know 2 of the pins felt "different". That is really all i can say. I am going to have to pick this lock more and when i get a schilage deadbolt- I will do more feeling exercises. But again in this lock it was my tension that needed to be changed.

I know they contain spool pins I am just not sure how many. I can pick mine under 1 min now. Once you figure it out 5 or 6 times they start to get pretty easy. I broke my batman pick on it though. I am pretty ticked.

We use these 140's at work for lock-out locks. Some of them are easier to pick than others. I think the depths of the pins makes a difference, some of them have some real wild key cuts. I took one apart and it had 3 spool pins in it.

Hey Ray do you work at a mill. If I ever did I would get a Abloy because if the machines turn on you are toast!

I've practiced on the masterlock 140 as well and actually find it pretty easy to get open, i've both racked it and got it open pin by pin. I'd like to know how many spool pins it has anyone know for sure?

The 140 I have has 2 security pins , Numbers 3 and 5 pin seem to be the ones that give me most trouble. From what I've learned for the 140's is Trying different tension tools whilst gently rakeing is the key. If all else fails , Get the bolt cutters out. :D

Just took a look in it there with the scope , Cheers parapilot for the correction. It has only four pins. I was getting it mixed up with a different lock interly. I give it a quick it a picking and found that the 140 I have has only one spool pin, Its a bit of a bugger to get but got there in the end , Cheers guys.

That was one of my first picks. There is a video floating around here of me picking it, closing it and raking it back open in ~8 seconds.

There is definitely at least 2 security pins.
