Brinks Deadbolt Disassembly with pics

Postby thegreek » 6 Dec 2006 14:04

This is how to take apart a brinks deadbolt lock. I don't know the series/model.

The back of the lock looks like this, it has a lock washer/bolt that is held in place by a spring loaded detent/lock pin.

Image

Press the lockpin down and rotate the the bolt it will go only one click before the pin pops up into the next space. Press it down again and rotate again, after a few clicks the bolt is high enough for you to just continue unscrewing it.

Image

After you take off the bolt, remove the pin, then turn the lock over and remove the spring.

Image

Use the key and a follower to rotate the lock and begin removing the lock while following with anything that fits in the plug/cylinder

Image

Once you removed the pins/springs without having them fly all over the place you can repin it or just remove pins to practice picking with fewer pins. An easy way to get the springs back in the cylinder without tweezers is using a small magnet the one in the picture is on the tip of a small screwdriver

Put the pins back in the cylinder

My camera battery went dead at this point so this is more of a disassembly guide you should be able to figure out how to get it back together from this point. Having a plug follower would make it easier to re assemble. I would start with putting the pins and springs in the rear most position. The picture shows the pin in the front spot just so you can see how it sits on the spring. Insert the follower to hold it down then continue to the first pin, once there all in and held down you can now insert your lock without the key slightly off center and once the lock is all the way in the cylinder rotate it and all the pins will fall in place. I know brinks aren't the best deadbolts out or hardest to take apart this is just a general guide on how to do it in case anyone needs to know how.

Nice job, a pic with the pins lined up, next to the key would have been nice, but maybe when you get your camera working again, you can post those too,

i was fiddlgin with a cheapie lock with a similar screw down collar/spring loaded post a few days ago and found that depressing the pin and shoving a thin piece of shim (i was using the metal bits from security tags) in over the pin w/in the screw collar allowed me to unscrew the collar by hand w/o the pin popping out.

will try to get a pic or two of this this eve and post tomorrow.

The lock pin is hardly under pressure and as soon as you can freely rotate the collar it's not under any pressure at all so you don't have to worry about it flying out of the lock.

Just remeber to keep the lock consistant chamnbers 2-5 are good for security pins.

Chamber one should have a standard driver, but if you want to get tricky add a serrated key pin.

Just htoguht i would add becuase it looks like a spool in chamber one :)
