First lock I ever picked...

Postby 2122 » 5 Dec 2006 23:38

My friend decided to see if he could pick the lock to his desk, and he later showed me. We had some contests to see who could open it fastest, and I set the record at 4 seconds!! It was a five pin wafer lock. Later I tried again, stuck the pick and wrench in, put alot of torque on the lock and quickly pulled the pick out. The lock slammed open cause I wasn't expecting it. What happend?

Hey, welcome to the site and such. Everyone gets this lecture so it is not directed at you necessarily...

first off always follow these simple rules:

1) Search before you ask, this makes life better for everyone because there are less repeat threads and we're not answering the same "what is a bump key" type questions over and over.

2) DON'T PICK LOCKS YOU RELY ON!!! This means if the lock is attached to a door, cabinet, vehicle, chastity belt, casket, whatever... unless it is there for the SOLE PURPOSE of being picked, DO NOT PRACTICE WITH THAT LOCK. You CAN and WILL break it... and then your in trouble.

3) DONT PICK LOCKS YOU DONT OWN!!! The only thing worse then breaking the lock attached to your sister's chastity belt is breaking a lock you don't own. Unless you are a locksmith or have EXPLICIT permission to pick a lock, with the owner understanding the lock may be damaged, DO NOT PICK IT.

That being said check out these places for helpful information on getting started.

The MIT Guide to lock picking can be found:

the LSI Guide to lock Picking can be found:

and check out EVERY link found on this page, they are all great:

heya, and welcome to the site

What u did was *raked* the lock. although in my experience it doesn't work with wafer locks. but thats what it sounds like u managed to do. but as Melvin says.... don't pick locks u rely on and dont pick locks on desks at work. first of all u dont won the desk second ude have a hard time explaining what u were up 2.

Get ur self a cheap pick set from southord.com and some cheap locks on ebay to practice on if you are interested in the hobby.

This:
http://www.lockpickshop.com/p-PXS-14.html
is the pick set I asked for for christmas.
Along with some of the cutaway locks from the site.

The desk was in my friends room, and the part of the lock that latched the drawer shut was broken so the drawer could be opened even if the lock was locked.

ok, first things first...
A) Are you kidding me????? wafer locks are the easiest locks to rake to me  , though i cant seem to rake pin tumblers that well...

B) The 14 piece set is the set I first started out on, and will be an absolutely perfect set for you, especially for christmas. (I'm thinking about getting some of raimundo's bogotas for christmas.) The vinyl sleeves were a little tough to put on for me, so i suggest using some soap or something to get em through. Also with the picks you might want to consider de-burring them with some really really really fine sandpaper or something, I didn't personally, but from what digital_blue says they're a lot smoother in the lock.
It's ok guys, i have a really bad attention sp-wow look, a beach!

No kidding! I have also found that raking works best with raking. The raking technique used may need a little fine tuning, and it may help to know what type of pick is being used to rake them.

A medium half diamond, half round, full ball, double and triple ball are best for wafer locks. I tend to use the half diamond more often than the others, it gives me the best relults. Though you may find a a half dozen of the others to work well for you.

I'm no stranger to sarcasm :D , (lol didnt realize i put that many question marks) i normally use an s rake for wafer locks and an l rake for pin tumblers. I just found what he said surprising seeing as how wafer locks are generally the only locks i rake ("SPP and you will be free")
sorry if you got a negative connotation with what i said lol... or maybe im just getting the same from you...
