Quick change cylinder

Postby bowleya » 7 Dec 2006 18:08

Hi All

This evening i went to a job at a Hostel on arrival i was given the lock in a box. I was asked to fit it to the main entrance door. On closer inspection it appeared to be just a pair of handles with a Mechanism to pull back the bolt. One handle was plain but on the external handle there was a Figure of Eight shaped hole. I believe this is so the cylinder can be easily changed. My question is

1. What is the Make of this type of lock
2. How do you unscrew the handle so that the lock can be fitted into
the door?

Thanks in advance

The lock could be any of the large format interchangable core cylinders or any of the small format interchangeable core cylinders.

SOME small format cylinders can be
Best
Arrow
Medeco

Most large format cores I see are schlage variety.

How to disassemble the hardware I cannot help you with since you do not list a brand and model number.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Cheers Zeke

I have studied the web and it does look identical to a Best 6K Medium Duty Knob Series with a tulip knob, unfortuately the box was plain with no fitting instructions.

Interchangable cores need a master core removal key that when inserted and turned to 1 oclock will disengaged the core enabling you to replace it with a new one. You need this key and should be held my the master key holder.
I have had this before again on a hostel where they had been given a number of spare cores which any tom dick or harry with the above mentioned key can change the lock when someone leaves without calling a lockie. Thing is the key is normally lost hence where I came in. The lock was a BEST lock.

what do you need to do to solve the problem of not having the master key to remove the core?

the core change key must be unique to the system I assume? otherwise you could open any Best K6 door with a single key and methinks that wouldn't be very secure!

Yes the key is unique to the system and normally part of a master keyed suite. I was called to change a cylinder after a naughty boy had left in a temper and the refuge didnt want him back in. They didnt have the said key so I had to replace the front door rim cylinder from the BEST to a standard rim as a temp measure until the key was sourced. With out the key you are stumped. I remember seeing someones user signature on this site.' Make a locksmith happy lose a key, make a Locksmith very happy lose a master key' that could of be very true in this suituation!

Thanks for confirming that for me haribo. I had the idea that you could maybe try to pick the core to the control shearline by chance but it's not worth bothering trying for long with all the bottom pins in a master keyed lock I expect. You'd have to be very lucky.
