Abus 65/40

I got this Abus 65/40, and I cannot pick it. When I insert the key, I cannot take the key out before I lock it again. I think it has got 5 pins, but not sure. Why is this lock so hard, when I can pick Abus 65/35 with no problems?

It's exactly the same lock as your other. Just that the shackle is longer. I have had that happen with certain masterlocks too. I can pick one easy and the next lock of the same style I cannot. One of the locks I couldn't pick, I took it apart and it had a bent top spring in it. I assume this is what was the problem as when I put it back together with a new spring, I picked it. I have a masterlock which is close to what yours is that is cut away (it came out of a locksmith course) and it's tight in there. I have trouble navigating in there because there is just no room with my picks.....and I have trouble picking it even though I can see what i'm doing.

It's probably because of the way the keys are cut. do you rake your lock or single pin pick it?(the one you can open) it might be one of two things, either 1) the first lock had a really easy cut so you could rake over it easily, or 2) the second lock has a high-low combination and it is difficult to get the back one. take a look at the cuts on your keys, if one looks like this, its the first problem

The Abus 65/40 is probably the toughest little brass lock I have picked. I was at the locksmith's and asked about the padlock he had available, I mentioned I wanted a picking challenge. He laughed and tossed me the 65/40, I told him that it would probably take me 10 min or less. He said not likely, as he had tried to pick it himself. So I bought a new 65/40 home all sealed, shiny and new....... very frustrating. The tolerances in the plug, as well as the security pins really made it a challenge. Took me over 2 hours of picking to open, spread over a few days......

Still haven't got it. But since I started lockpicking last week, I think I will have to continue to try. One day...

I bought 5 locks yesterday, just to see if it was hard too pick other locks. Guess what? So far I think it is easy. Got the 5 locks open in 3min 39secs. And I still haven't used a rake. So today I am making myself a rake. =) Maybe I can open the Abus then.

To be honest, I have had no success raking the abus. The only way I get it to open is to pick it one pin at a time. I find the security pins on it, do not respond to raking very well.
You need a very light touch on the tension wrench, and when you get false set, just ease off slightly and move the pins up a bit gently.

you can rake them easily using an L rake (long ripple), moving it quickly in and out, while applying very little to little tension.



I use this on an ABUS 55/50 all the time. I can pick that lock pin by pin, but it does take longer than raking with the L rake.

Hello there,
I'm new here, and new to lockpicking, and instead of creating a new post I'll just jump in with you if you don't mind?

Thing is I had this Abus 65/40 laying around but without the key,
so I became determined to pick it.
I used a bent 1 1/2" nail as a torque-wrench, and half a pair of tweezers as a pick, and lo and behold, a couple of days ago it popped open.
What a rush!

Since then, I've probably picked it 50 times, and I've read up on everything I could find in terms of guides etc.
However, when I first tried to pick the Abus I did it in the manner that MIT and other sources suggested, but it was only when I got annoyed and drastically increased the torque that I succeeded.

Thing is, I can't recall that any of the guides told me that the pins will bind multiple times. In the Abus, I have to visit each pin up to 4 times!
This made me think about serrated pins. Am I right?

spools you say, I am obviously no master in the art of search-fu.

once you have raked a few times keep your tension and change over to a hook. go along each pin and when you press the spools your tensioner will push back slightly in the opposite direction. gently ease off tensioner and pop the spool over the shear line.
this way seems to work on my abus locks.
