i need some help.

Postby Ganphra » 9 Dec 2006 1:57

hello, just recently I have been thinking about starting a small independant business. I have not taken any training courses, I taught myself (obviously with the help of a book or two) and i think i am quite good. So far I can't afford a lock pick set but i have been using a bobby pin and a clip off of a pen lid. I can open pretty much anypin tumbler in under 3 minutes, usually under 2. Anyways i was wondering what you need to start a bussiness? Like a license etc. Could someone please help?

p.s. im saving up for a lockpicking kit.
just be happy, smile to yourself, right now, even if your sad....you'll like it, sing to yourself if you must, please for your sake and the worlds be happy, the last thing we need is more sadness....its alright.......don't worry

it depends on the province. If you just want to do auto and home lockouts, you might be able to get away with nothing. just a set of picks and a car.

A business costs a lot of money. You need a vehicle, several loaded tool boxes, a key machine and the ability to rekey locks.

Picking locks isn't going to get you business. And what do you do when someone needs their lock opened because they LOST their key. You can't expect them to call you every time they need to get into their house.

Don't forget automotive. Can you break into cars without damaging them?

If you can't afford a $15 pick set, you can't afford $400~800 of advertisement. Being able to pick locks isn't going to get people to call you. Nobody even knows you exist.

Ganphra, could you do me/us a favour and put a space in your sig so it moves it to two lines of text instead of one long line that makes the screen to wide,

The rules are 80 pixels high and 500 pixels long and im guessing yours is to long

A space between the lower case and upper case letters should split it up enough,

Word of advise. If you go out to unlock something for a paying customer anduse a bobby pin and the pocket clip from a pen, they are going to think you are more of a theif than a locksmith.

If you are going to do a professional job, get some professional training and professional tools. At least look the part or you are going to give the industry more of a black eye than it already has.

What are you going to do when you can not get it open? What if they lost the keys...you just gonna leave? What are you going to do when the customer see's what you are doing and tells you to get off their property or calls the police? Don't think it will happen? Try getting someone to pay you for unlocking their home or business like that and reality will hit real fast.

Think before you act.

About the auto jigglers...as far as i can tell, they are just garbage. they are not for use by professionals. Dont waste your money. instead practice your picking and auto opening skills

The jigglers are garbage, BUT, one of the jigglers makes a decent ball pick for some large keyways or high cut depths. My standard ball pick feels impotent in many car doors.

Forget starting up for the foreseeable future. If you can't afford picks I can only assume the statement "pretty much anypin tumbler in under 3 minutes, usually under 2." means you can open the four or five locks you have in your house and maybe low end ones bought from your local hardware store. If you can't afford picks I doubt you've encpountered enough locks of a moderate to good standard which you'd undoubitdly quickly encounter. No one wants an inexperienced locksmith attacking their door with chewed up bic pen parts and bobby pins, nor an inexperienced locksmith attacking their door with picks in a futile effort to get past a moderate lock. Certainly no one wants a locksmith that can only pick locks if they want locks installed, repinned, masterkeyed, impressioned ect ect ect.
