A Better hook pick

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

A Better hook pick

Postby BazookaMedic » 9 Dec 2006 17:31

This is my improvement on the hook pick. It is very simple and makes it easier to locate and set pins in the lock.

Tools required:
Tri-file
Brain
Hook pick.

All you do is file a half cresent in the top edge of the hook like in these two photos.

A possible improvement on this is to take an actual pin from a given brand of lock and file that profile into the top of the hook pick.

Critism is welcomed.

Nice improvement.

The good news; If you thought of this all on your own, you get major kudos, because it shows an advanced level of thought toward your tools and your picking technique.
The bad news; Its been done before by several people, and I believe there are even a few threads here about it.

On to the helpful stuff! :D

I don't know if this is a quick prototype on your part, but here are the first two things that stike me.

1. You will want to remove and points from the tip, and make sure that all edges are smooth and rounded.

2. Don't make the depression too deep. The objective is to seat the pin on teh tip of the pick for solid feedback, not craddle it. Making the depression too deep will result in catching the pins, and possibly unsetting something you have already set.

Keep up the good work!

Aww man. I really thought no one had thought of this. This was actually one of my early hooks that i made when i first attempted to make my own picks. I have major work to do to make it "refined" i.e. the shank is not a straight line, 100 grit paper was used, etc. etc.

My inspiration was that I was bored out of my mind, Had no raw stock to produce anything, and an unloved hook lying around. You will see this same pick in the future for my corrosion resistance fisish guide.

The master has spoken.

I will take what you said and produce another "cleaner" model. I am feeling a little bit low because i truly thought I had something good and original. Thats the cool thing about making lockpicking stuff. You could be siting on patent pending material.

Wow! Cool! I'm a master, neat.

Thanks, now don't say it again. I may get an ego and then somebody will think I am posturing or something, and they will start ranting about how good I think I am.

Can't wait to see your new version.

I know what you mean about new material. Every once in a while I will think I have something new, and then I research it, and discover its been done before. It's a real downer sometimes. Don't let it get to you though, I never do and you came up with it on your own. That's good stuff.

Yeah, don't feel bad about re-discovering the wheel. It means you're thinking along the same lines as people who were right.

thanks for the support all. I suggest taking a look at the hyper sensitive weighted pick idea of mine from a while back. I have an idea for a radically new, sleek, ingenious, and sexy pick design.

Before you read the rest of my post, quickly grab a piece of paper and write down a noun and then a verb.

And in reply to BazookaMedic

I feel your disappointment BazookaMedic
I've done this pleanty of times, thought i came up with something cool, look it up via search to check and find it's already been done.
It's no biggie tho, keep on thinking things up and eventually you'll find something to call "BazookaMedic's _(noun)_ for _(verb)_ing locks"

Now, what did everyone come up with for the noun and verb?
