New template set

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Hey Rom did you ever find a source for those rivets we had talked about previously?

I like and could use the 'reach-type' pick. Could also use the Royal set. PM if you get any details.

This set looks very complete. A good selection of tension wrenchs and one is ready to work.

I think it needs a Bogata.
BTW, what spacings are the King and Queen for?

Yeah, the later sets are going to get some additional picks.

The spacings on the King and Queen here are "universal" if I remember correctly.

Here's a little secret. I use steel sheet in a roll. The roll is 25 foot long, and 6 inches wide. I cut each roll into 5 x 6 inch sections. So, a lot of my templates are sized to fit on these sheets.

So about how much do those rolls cost? And do they need to be tempered and all and is it viable to do so with them if they do not need to be tempered. I might have an affordable way to experiment with metal.

from mcmaster carr (us industrial supplier) 50'x6" rolls of spring steel shim stock range from 16-28$ depending on thickness. (www.mcmaster.com bottom right of main page, raw materials>shim stock)

The stainless rolls that I have been using are full hard, spring temper. Unless I really screw something up, I don't have to re-temper them. They are a little harder, and slower to grind but its worth it.

The new production picks are going to be using much larger sheets of a marine grade spring stainless steel, or a high tensile blued spring steel.

The rolls are cheaper than getting boxes of feeler gauges, but they take some more prep time.

Where abouts do you buy the rolls? Anywhere besides a welding supply store in Dartmouth or Halifax have them? I'm hoping for somewhere near Wolfville.....

We have the new hopgood metals downtown now, but I think they do metal roofing, however they might order some in....

i *believe* that www.mcmaster.com ships to canada despite their occasionally not shipping outside the usa. last i ordered from them shippign was distrubingly reasonable despite the bit of discomfort that the ups dude had of getting the box o steel and bronze off his truck.

Nothing local I am afraid. New Minas Sheet Metal MAY order it, but I haven't asked them yet about these things.

When using these templates, what do most of you use to adhere it to the metal blank? I read the "how-to" where a glue stick was used...does this hold it while dipping the metal in water? For my first tools I just eye-balled it because I didn't have a glue stick and wanted to get started. I can post a pic later since they turned out ok. A couple of the five different styles I made worked, which says a lot for a newbie like me. Now that I got the impatience out my system I want to make a little nicer set with templates.
