How tamper proof are Medeco Air 5 pin locks?

Postby WOT » 14 Dec 2006 4:26

The Kwikset deadbolt on my front door is failing and I have ordered a new old stock Medeco deadbolt based on Medeco Air 5-pin cylinder.

I'm not too concerned with resistance against brute force entry and I won't bother with frame reinforcement since if someone really wants to get in, they can just break the window and climb in through there. I'm trying to build resistance against clean-entry by impressioning, bumping or picking.

How tamper resistant is the Medeco Air lock?

If someone was to take a key to a locksmith and ask for a copy, is it likely they'll simply grab a Kaba-Ilco 1515(not restricted) and copy it for more bucks than a standard key or would they refuse to do it?

Air is just as resistant to picking and bumping as biaxial. They still use the rotating pin design and thus operate on the same principal. The security you are loosing going with air is having a restricted blank.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!
