Re-pining a lock to make it harder to pick

Postby Anero » 14 Dec 2006 20:02

Hey everyone,

a few weeks ago a bought a Schlage 5 pin deadbolt 4 spools 1 standard

i knew this lock to the point sometimes with the right tension just puting a bogota rake in this lock would pop open

so in light of that and reading a few threads about pinning locks to make them hard to pick.

I did just that moved around not only the drivers but the top pins also, this lock had become a pain the the fingers to pick :P fasle sets like crazy now,

anyways just thought i would post that for anyone getting bored and thinking about buying a new lock, re-pinning can make 1 lock into a whole different lock.

First off, please use the search function. Second, you can pin the lock in a high and low pattern and that would make it harder to pick or rake. For example, use a 9 pin first, then a 1, then a 6, then a 1 and keep using high-low configurations.
If all fails, use nitroglycerine.

i dont think he was asking a question so much as making a suggestion. and a pretty good one at that. simply changing around the pins in a lock can greatly increase its difficulty.

yes just a suggestion, not a question :) locks get can get expensive $10-$20 for some pad locks and $30-$100+ for some deadbolts so insted of paying a ton of cash for a new lock once you figured your current ones out Re-pin :)

however, keep in mind that since the MACS of schlage is 6 (the maximum difference between pins should be 6 steps) there would be no valid key that could go along with this combination.
