so i've this deadbolt that's a bit odd

it is possible to remove the key at other than the neutral position (i.e. 30 degrees, 90 degrees, etc) however this does not seem to allow the deadbolt to be manipulated with a tension wrench although the plug can spin.

long story short, i assume that this lock shoudl be replaced immediately?

so.. since i don't own the lock and it still "works" but it's security affects me, how do i describe to penny wise pound foolish slightly batty owner of said lock that it shoudl be replaced? short of having my marginally cracked (as it was when i recieved it) key break off in the keyway by *cough* accident?

and do i replace the entire dead bolt, or just the lock proper?

(i do handyman work for this guy, and have swapped out locks before, although now feel comfortable rekeying and changing various bits instead of entier assemblies)

I would strip the lock down and see what's really going on inside. In all likelihood, just repinning the lock will fix up your problem. It's hard to say from your description what the actual problem is, but you should not be able to pull a key from a lock unless the plug is upright.

Yes, this makes me wonder whether the pins are off on their holiday.

Could this be a case of broken springs?
And if so, how come that the entire row of pins is like this?

so i took this thing off and poke it enough to determine that it was old/abused enoughto have me charge a new schlage B360 to the landlord and put it in. i only poked around it for a moment before installing, but compared to the weiser that had been there and the cheapie deadbolt i've got to play with is pretty snazzy.

the problem as best i can sort out is/was this:

the lock had worn enough internally to allow a significant ammount of play with the plug w/in the body and key within the plug, and had enough graphite laminated onto and between pins that each pin could be 1 or 2 depths high or low and still clear the shear "line" (rad canyon)

the lock was pinned +/- 3,4,5,6,5 (by the key or 34566 by the pins) (or do i have that backwards) such that the deepest pin was not significantly shorter than anything else so that with the ammount of play in the lock the key had only to clear shorter pins that each only had to clear the little bump after eachcut in the key to release it.

after taking it apart adn throughily cleaning it , i opened it in one try with teh straight back of a pick inserted at a slight angle and using the pick as a key.

now, how do i go about pickingsommething that has so much play in it since it' snow a fun lock?
