Square tipped feeler pick

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Square tipped feeler pick

Postby jiggler » 15 Dec 2006 13:23

Can anyone tell me how this pick is supposed to be used?

I've only ever used it for feeling the number of pins in a cylinder by inserting it all the way in and depressing all the pin columns as far a possible and then listening fro the clicks as I withdraw the pick. I could use a tension wrench or just a normal pick to do this so I wondered if there was any specific reason this square feeler is included in picksets?

I've had a search but didn't locte anything.

Cheers folks

are you talking about a dimand pick?

_____/\

is so you car ether use like a rake(works well im locks with a Hi-Low combo) or hook( goes over pins better).

overall i don't use a dimand much but i know many who do

jiggler, is this what you are referring to?

It only shows the tip in the picture of the link you posted so I can't say for sure. Otherwise is prolly used as iNtago explained.

Yeah, that's the one I mean.

It just sems a pointless addition to a pickset if it's just to feel around. I mean, why would you change to a different pick to feel around when you've got the hook in your hand?

Since this is the one, I don't think it would be used for lifting pins as it's really thin and flimsy (at least the one I have is).

I have not really used it for anything other than a shim and for decoding wheeled combo locks, like the ones on brief cases.

Isn't that a Weiser shim pick?
If so, I don't think it's made to pick in the conventional fashion. I believe it's made to shim a lock open from the back, while you press the pins up from the keyway using a regular pick.

Or maybe I'm hallucinating again... it happens more often nowadays.

It would be useful for decoding the combo locks for sure. Perhaps that's why they come in the pickset.

It just seems odd as it's sold as a feeler.

It's not really important what it's for, of course - I just wondered?? Over half the picks in my set dont get used so another unused one doesn't make much difference

it's a weiser shim, it's not a pick

it can be used to shim some old weisers from the front i believe, but i've only ever used it for "sesamee" style decoding and once to shim a 1947 dodge lock from the front.

Kind of like the perfectly flat 'curves' in the Falle set. I've always wondered about those. When/how often are the used?

it is the same thickness of a normal pick. i believe it is just used to feel the picks and lift some up to the sheer line. kinda like using the opposite side of a pick. I use mine alot for my m1 trick...

Yours must be thicker than the one I have in that pic. That one is a fraction of the thickness of a standard SO pick. I didn't check it with a micrometer but it is around a 1/4 to a 1/3 of a standards thickness. Real flimsy.

ah i was thinking of the one that came with my hpc set. the one that was used as an example maybe. if it is a lot thinner then probably cn be used as a wieser shim and possibly as a seseame decoder, but i think that squared tip might make it a little harder instead of the conventional design.
