Finally - A 32 pc lockpick set

Postby TruShinobi » 18 Dec 2006 23:05

YES! Finally got a 32 pc lockpick set i've been wanting for a long time. This is my first set. I've always wanted to pick locks since i was 9. so anyways...looked around for a lock. found one that didn't have a key so i picked it. first time - 15 seconds. second time - 1 second. just felt like sharing my experience.

This is an old lock:

Also, if anyone has any ideas on some good hard locks i can buy, i would really appreciate it.

Also, this set from southord actually has 33 pc. and its at a good price if anyone wants one. It's in the outlet section - a few scratches - but at the same price as an unscratched 20 pc.

oh yeah, i forgot to say, i've picked my room lock, the lock & deadbolt at the back of my house, and the garage door lock. i know this undermines the security of the locks...but we do plan on replacing them... they're kinda old anyways.

Here's an idea for more difficult locks to pick. Try American Locks Co. with a lock that has serrated pins.

Popular Mechanics, eh? Try this: find something thin that will reach the back of the keyway and start jabbing it. Let me know if it pops right open like my PM padlock does. Time to open: about 1/4 of a second. :)

To the OP... do you find yourself using all or most of those picks or at some point or another? Im trying to decide whether i want to get a 20 or 32 pick set, or just wait till next week and make my own and just wondering if having that many picks would be a waste of money for a hobbiest like me.

I'm not entirely sure that a small set is the best thing to have. Certainly you can pick an awful lot of locks with only five picks and two tension wrenches.

However, there are a variety of locks that may benefit from having an assortment of picks.

Some members will note the recent template set I posted. While this is one of my larger sets, it is not fully complete, and it has 17 picks.

Admittedly again, many people can do completely without rakes, or any sort of ball pick. However, each of these picks is specific to a certain variety or size of lock.

What I find most bothersome about many comercial pick sets is the duplication of picks. In many instances you will get 14 handled picks, and 14 un-handled picks and some tension wrenches. While it may be a 32 piece set, it isn't in fact a wide variety of picks.

I think its a great way to start, if only for the case if nothing else. Take a look at the price of cases alone, and you will see what I mean.

After you have a larger set, you can remove the picks you don't use to make room for tools that you have made or bought to fill any gaps you think exist in the set.

Welcome to the forums

I use southord as well. started with the 5pc set n am building it up as i go. Best tip i can give u with them is to wrap some electrical tape round the handles, makes them much more comfortable to hold if ur picking for long periods at a time.

Good look with ur next lock hope 2 see u hanging around here in the future

legion - ummm. you actually have to lift the last pin on mine. but i can do it in less than a second, too. (on average - around 1/4)

I agree with Rom - i actually wanted the 32 pc for the spares and like Rom said, for the different types of locks. you could use the spares for those improv electric pick guns. =)

Sloth - i usually stick with one pick for at least 15 min if i'm having no luck with a lock. after 15 then i move on to the next pick.no offense but if you don't the bucks (like i did) you can make your own. although if you're thinking of getting 20 as opposed to a 30 pc set, the southord outlet sells it's 32 pc (actually 33) for the same price as its catalogue 20 pc. i thought it was a good deal

thx JackNco

jackbeef - i'll try looking around for that if they sell that around my area.
thx
