Steel wire picks

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Steel wire picks

Postby Splintercell01011 » 19 Dec 2006 14:59

i got some steel wire yesterday and i picked a padlock 23 times and the door lock nearly 40 times. they tend to wear out and bend after a while. i only have pliers to bend them. can sombody show me some good basic shapes that i could make with the stuff i have.Thank you.

You could pound the wire flat then grind it to shape. Then for strength you might want to temper it. but get some hack saw blades and a bench grinder and file. Get some of romstars fabulous templates, read shrubs guide to pick making, and have fun making your picks.

He should have no problem with the patience needed to make picks if he pick two locks 63 times (and counted each time). So much for ADD.

template

heres a good template for a round wire pick, sand and round one end and make a finger loop to put over the second finger giveing a secure hold while also gripping ahead of the loop with thumb and forefinger, the pick would look like a 6 with the straight top ending in a hook, do the hook last, and finish the end with file and sandpaper so it is not sharp but rounded and too smooth to make scratches in the brass. the size of the loop is determined by your finger, and the length of the shaft is determined by the length of the key blade.
the loop also makes it easy to control the roll of the wire inside the lock.
( as in pitch roll and yaw, as the xyz axises of an airplane) a round wire pick needs this handle for control.
