Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Master lock combo lock with keyed back up

Postby BazookaMedic » 19 Dec 2006 19:19

Im not sure of the exact name but you see these at schools. They can be openend by the correct combo or by an administrator or SRO using a key. For any given institution they use the same key. So here we go.

My measurements were taken with a precision reloading caliper. Zeke should know what im talking about if he feels like elaborating.

Type of pins: regular, no security pins

Number of pins: 4

Diameter of pins: 2.003 --- 2.010 millimeters

Spacing of pins: 1 millimeter EXACT

Maximum variation of pins: 1/8 inch EXACT

Diameter of plug: 8.150 centemeters

Inside Diameter of hull: 8.255 centemeters

Ease of shimming: I could not do it so i Filled the top of the hull off.

This is my first post on information about a lock. Please give me suggestions on how i should improve next time. I attempted to save the entire mechnism inside the lock but unfortunately the drilling and cutting caused cheaply made componets to vibrate themselves appart.

Whoops forgot the camera used to take the pictures was a 0.5 megapixel sony digital mavica that uses floppy disks instead of memory sticks. A stock lense was used.

The lighting was my desk lamp only with my led minimag.

that V51 on the lock is the series number for the key (ie any lock with v51 stamped on it use the same key) and you can order it from masterlock.... hope that isn't from a system you control

Nope every 5 years my school gets rid of all of its locks. I aquired 3 of them for $5.00. do you think it would be a good idea to remove the pictures though?

Well ok Like what if my school used the same lock series when they ordered i belive it is 1,756 new locks.

I just searched and had never seen a post on this type of lock so i decided to do it.

then a person from your school could see the series number on the back of the pad lock. it's non-issue, good pictures. I was only telling you what the numbers were so you knew what it was and if you where a keyholder then you'd be aware that you were exposing the system number

too many factors to talk about how a person could exploit this... and truthfully those photos are the last way they'd do it

if i were to do it i would Shim it. I do not like shimming but that might be the fatest NDE way to do it. Picking would definately require slimline tools.

Rytan picks should be able to do the job quite nicely, if they'd survive the use. :?

I have a keyed american combo lock that is dead easy to pick. Since the keyway is soo small it creates a fun challenge trying to get your tools in there. Shimming is no fun. There is no challenge in it.

Very nice pictures, I'm amazed it let you zoom in that much without blurring. You might see if there's a white balance setting on the camera or run them through some basic photo software to correct the color but otherwise they are perfect.

Near zero photoshop experience so help would be appreciated. The trick is to move the camera and focus. Not to maintain a fixed posistion and try to zoom in real close. I did it with the original sony digital mavica half megapixel camera. those use floppies and not the memory sticks. Then i hear about people and their fancy 5.0 megapixel and greater cameras and they still get subpar quality.

I have a similar lock but no key to go with it, although it's very easy to pick, it would be nice to have a key for it. mine is a v58 lock. i looked around on the masterlock website and i couldn't find an option for ordering such a key. does anyone have an idea where i might find a way to order one?

Also my lock has some other numbers on it they are as follows
V58
311713
04

does anyone know what these numbers mean?

thanks :D
