no luck with 4 pin padlock

Would it be best to start out on a door lock?
Can you take them apart and change the pins (it would probably be best to start with 2 pins?)
Do you need a special tool to do this?
What is the name of the tool?

I used a pin tumbler, Yales are hard for beginners like us. i just picked my first.

No specials tools. at the far end of the barrel theres a clip that needs to be taken off (pliers and srewdriver). Then insert the key turn and pull, Cover the end with your finger and take it slow, or your lose the bits.

It depends on the lock. Most laminated padlocks are not worth the effort to grind away the rivets. You should buy a rekeyable padlock, if you want to switch the pins around with minimum effort.

I would recommend buying a kwikset deadbolt for a practice lock. They're easy to pick, even without taking any pins out, although it's easy enough to take them out if you want to. It's also a good idea to start out on something other than a padlock, as most padlocks have some sort of spring tension that is applied to the plug, which can throw off the learner's feel for the amount of tension needed. That and I almost find deadbolts/doorknobs easier to hold (between the knees), but that may be a matter of personal preference. Good luck.

if these rekeyable padlocks are the best bet for me to take out and reset the pins do the hardware sell them? hopefully at an affordable price?

The only reason i post new posts is because i think brand new posts draw more attention.
Rather than people thinking "Oh, ive already been there done that"

no, it just angers ppl. Most noobies do it, they keep posting and it drives us nuts. Just keep it in order, and I guarentee you'll be getting more responses this way
