Cut the places that you don't need. Visualise the lock working, and think if the place where you're going to cut is really needed. Visualise the lock before and after you make the cuts.

so iwould want to cut above the plug. prferably right at the sheerline. the cut up from there leaving about 3/4 of the bored hole for the pnis so the pins would stay in place yet still allow the clear veiw of the pins.

What lock are you trying to cut away?
Do you have a pic of it?
Dont cut anything until you have a list of definate certain operations of how and where to cut, it is very easy to scrap the lock,
If you have a lock your wanting to do post it up and we can advice with more certainty, if its a common lock lok for pics on site of other cutaway ones and copy them,
A lock in most cases needs to be cutaway after its been dissasembled otherwise you risk damageing the lock internals,
If your not machineing it out and hand cutting instead you need to work out where your cutting, mark it out, cut with slow methodical strokes paying attention to keeping things straight,
Make sure you cut leaving plenty to clean up with a file, saw cut edges look a mess and go too deep to file once your already at the limits of the cut anyway (check out the lock on the pdf on my www button, that cutaway is a right mess but was roughly cut up in a minute for the use of the pdf),
Start from the begining and get your lock, find where to cut that lock, cut with a junior hacksaw as they have thiner blades and more Teeth Per Inch,

Yeah, different locks (company and model) make a big difference. If your gonna do a cutaway on a Kwiset Ultramax then you well have to cut alot more than if you were to do a schlage. I am going to do a schlage in a few days, so ill see how that will turn out. Unfortunately i dont have a camera so i cant post picks. If your interested in schlages go to New questions and look down the list, there is a thread about schlage cutaways that gave me some help. In addition to the poster before me, if your not experienced using a dremel, you should practice on something first, made out of steel so you can get the feel of it. Whatever helps, its better than wasting a twenty dollar lock so you can get the feel for it.

Well the problem is I do not know what kind of lock it is. It is a pain in the rear end to pick. I have already worked my way up to 5 mushroom pins. The lock is a chineese made padlock with no markings except for made in china and 40mm. ill have to take a picture of it.

Here's a pic of a Papaiz 5 pin padlock, which would be similar to your Chinese padlock:
You don't need to cut away as much as this one, but maybe it will help you to figure out where to start. Just do a little at a time. You can always cut more off, but if you cut too much, you can't go back.

The Papaiz was done by the factory before the lock was assembled.
You can sometimes buy padlocks that are not pinned,"UP", which means there are no pins in them and they can be keyed to existing keys. The pin holes are exposed on the side for filling, and then caps are put in after the pins and springs. These would be much easier to make cut aways out of as you wouldn't damage the pins as you are cutting. Guard has these as well other brands.
Locksmiths may have them (we do). Don't think you could buy them at a retail store.

If you can't disassemble the lock, it would be a bad idea to make a cutaway. You will certainly ruin all pins and springs.
Look at other cutaways for inspiration.

If it is anything like a Tricircle I can post a photo I made that exposes the locking dogs without actually taking the lock apart.
If your lock is a Tricircle, you will also be able to remove the pins and springs very easily.
So yeah, if you want I'll post a photo of my half-finished Tricircle Cut-away.
Does your lock look anything like the one in this thread?

no illusion. mine has only 4 pins. Mine also does not have the tricircle stamp or logo. It actually appears to be a masterlock clone. I even took a key to my master no 140 and tried it in this lock. they key fits and the wards are the exact same as my no. 140. Ill need to post some pics when my camera finishes charging.
