Ok, so I bought a nice Brinks padlock the other day, cause I've gotten through every other lock I've tried...after a bit of playing with them. I'm not sure of the model number or anything, but it's a brass padlock, it has the maximum rating on the package, cost about $5 or $6 and has a little hole in the bottom. A picture of the key(that I took with my scanner of all things-the camera's not available) is at the end of the post. I have tried everything from SPP to raking with no avail. I get to where I've got all pin set(or so it feels), nothing is binding, I can even hear the bottoms of the pins moving freely if I shake it, but it won't open. It's brand new, so there shouldn't be any problems and the key opens it just fine. Anyone have any ideas? I'll try just about anything to open this thing after pulling my hair out over it this long. I'll be going out of town tomorrow so I may or may not be able to answer/read your posts.
Thanks,
Stash

You probably have set a spool pin. Do a search on spool pins so you can learn how to detect, and pick them.

try putting tension at the top of the keyway.
one problem i found is that a tension wrench will get caught at the bottom of the hull.

@jgencinc Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, I'm reading up on spool pins now
@iNtago Thanks for that bit of advice, I'll be trying that too.
Long live SPP-ing!

Yes, sound like security pins inside.

yes there are spools in this lock, i would say 3 of them, i just posted a video in the Pick-Fu video thread the other day of me raking this lock,
it's a nice little lock to play with if you are learning to feel for spools.
another brinks lock that is nice is this removable core lock from wal-mart it runs about $13 but comes with a key decoder for the KW1 keys, a little baggie of driver pins and an hex wrench to remove the core. i've bought 2 of them both had 4 spools and 1 normal pin.
maybe if you are new to spool, pick up that lock and repin it and follow DB's guide.

@Anero That lock sounds nice, maybe I'll pick one up at walmart tomorrow-sounds like a bargain at $13. My parents are kinda mad at me for buying like 3 new locks in the last week or so, but I've picked all but one of them, and it's Christmas time so they'll have to understand.

What kind of key is that? I have the same kind and I'd like to know so I can go get some blanks. I've looked at some catalogs and it looks a lot like an M16, but I've never tried to identify a key before.
