I think there are things called "claymore". They should be quite suitable to protect a bunch of plants, shouldn't they?

And back on a some-what serious note....
Those who are up to no good don't like noise...especially if the home-owner has a dog. Or even better, a dog who doesn't live in the house...

It's practically impossible not to make any noise when moving over gravel. Any form of building which is succeptible to being targeted for theft, espionage, kidnapping etc. usually has a break in the topography consisting of a gravel bed far wider than which is able to be jumped over etc.

Food for thought.

claymore

Postby raimundo » 1 Jan 2007 14:39

claymore is a directional command detonated mine, you have to place it, aimed at the direction of the enemy,(noted on the plastic case) and you have to squeeze the clicker at the appropriate moment. in any case, it will damage the garden, so forget that one.
In latin countries, where front lawns are not common, just a wall, and if any garden exists, its inside, surrounded by the house and property wall, the street is just walls and windows with thick iron bars, the thick iron bars in some cases were there for hundreds of years, the security or insecurity situation is static, and the iron bars are fundamental, however many houses do not have airconditioning, and are built to leave the windows glassless most of the time. A type of burglar developed who reaches into rooms from the street with a fishing pole to lift purses and such. Snatching off the table from outside on the street. for every problem there is a solution and one mans solution is the next mans problem.

The solution is even simpler still. You say it was 3 properties in a cul-de-sac that was robbed of its flora? Doesn't anyone suspect that neighbor with the jungle that appeared over night? :P

But yes, it would be rather difficult to prevent someone from making off with decorative gardening, without adding unsightly security. There are some alternatives though.

Use large flower pots that weigh in excess of 60 pounds that would be difficult to lift and transport.

For smaller pots, one could bolt them to the ground, or to an object which is buried in the ground. Since many pots have a drainage hole in the bottom, or are made of plastic, a simple bolt and washer can be inserted in the hole and secured to a slab of buried cement.

Make hanging plants permanent by securing the pot to the basket, and the basket on an irremovable hanger.

Claymores can be tripwired too. the improvised method involves a plastic spoon, some wire and a clothespin, you all can figure out the rest...

but yeah so many of you all talk about rigging explosives and other such nasties to the yard... mightest well let the thief take them if you do that, atleast you wont get prison time on top of losing all your plants.

Either plant those wonderful plants like one poster said (poison ivy etc) or go vietcong style on them lol.

or just a hole without spikes that when they drop into it they sprain their ankle or break their knee...

In my old house my family tried the whole bolt it to the ground/fix hanging things to beams permanently, but even though we had attached our lanterns to the beams, some idoit just made off anyways, so we ran 120V lines and put lights in them. One stole them after that. (i wonder why?? *zap*)
My current house also had the same problem when it was still pretty new. The landspacers would steal plants (my mom's roses, for example) and put them in a block or so down the street.
