Special Pins?

I have found a lock where the upper pins, the ones next to the spring, have the shape of a "double mushroom", like this:

Why do these pins have this form?
Are there specialties in opening this lock?

(Because I didn't know what these ones meant, I repinned the lock with normal pins....)

as stated, it is a spool pin. usually, most people get a spool before a mushroom or serrated pin.

so as i just said, there are three main types of security pins you will find.
spools: ||----||

serrated: |-|||||

and mushroom: (<||||

there are other types of security pins, but id say most fall into the advanced section. one type that i dont think does, is drill proof core type pins. they look like they might be security pins, but arent really. they look like this:

with a little tip that sometimes (?) goes in and out with pressure. now, i could be wrong on those ones though, cuz im not entirely sure, but thats what i found inside one of my yales once.


so theres a short little lesson on security pins, done entirely without uploading a single picture. there are pictures floating around, so if you want to learn about picking security pins, or see actual pictures of them, you will have to search, but this is just a little bit o' knowledge on the topic for ya.


oh and also, so you know, in order from top to bottom:

springs
driver pins (known also as top pins)
key pins (known also as bottom pins)

just some basic terminology for ya as well.
