New to Lock Picking - Advice

Postby Nathand » 5 Jan 2007 17:48

Hi, I'm fairly new to the whole Lock Picking thing. I bought some picks and a tension wrench that was recommended on Greg Miller's webpage, and bought a cheap Kwikset lock to practice on from Walmart.

I've been practicing the last few months on this Kwikset lock, and although I can pick it with ease (most of the time), I can't seem to pick any locks that are on the doors of my house...

What is a recommended Intermediate lock to buy? Although I've been practicing with the Kwikset lock religiously, I don't really feel like I'm becoming better at lock picking. I would really appreciate some advice.

Thanks,
Nathan

Welcome everybody,
For all thoes new to the site and lockpicking, LP101 is a great place to start.
Take a look at the new users section, first and don't be afraid to ask any questions just remember to try a search before posting. Cause everyone should HYSF as well as there Pick-fu.

If you're looking for locks to pick, buy some but, DO NOT PICK LOCKS YOU OR ANYONE ELSE RELY ON
I repeat DO NOT PICK LOCKS YOU OR ANYONE ELSE RELY ON, they can and will break, then your house/car/safe/chasity belt is vulnerable or unable to be opened (think: emergency situation).
Keep it legal.
Cheers,
UWSDWF

LOL, guys - Just because that was my first post here, doesn't mean I haven't been reading this website for a long time.

@UWSDWF - I have been reading the new users section, as well as searching.

I posted because I needed help, not because I'm lazy and haven't tried. How about posting something "on topic" with my original post?

Thanks,
Nathan

There's only one locksmith in my town, and I severely doubt he would give me any locks to practice on...

In fact [exaggeration] he'd probably call the police on me for trying to learn to pick locks [/exaggeration]

Are there any locks you would recommend me actually buying?

"spp"? What's that stand for?

Does it matter which Schlage lock I get?

Thanks,
Nathan

spp= single pin picking
Just get any dead bolt you like and pin it how you want it.
I seriously doubt you searched this stuff first as there are many many threads on this subject matter

Right, thanks...

I've been looking online at Schlage deadbolt locks, and they have different security levels, double cylinders, etc...

I really just don't know too much about locks. Do the levels of security really make a difference?

Thanks,
Nathan

I also forgot to mention I found this site:
http://www.factorylocks.com/scripts/fac ... c/schlageb

They seem to sell Schlage deadbolts for reasonable prices...

Thanks for the help,
Nathan

uhhh. if you had been up to date on all this stuff, and reading around the site, you would have had your profile filled out so we all know whereabouts in the world you live.

and i clicked on any given lock that i liked (based entirely on looks) from that link, and they were all like $70+. for one lock. that isnt reasonable for a schlage, not to me, maybe i clicked on one that was just super nice or something, but frankly, youd be better off just going to your local hardware store and buying one for like $30 or less usually. (depending on where you live of course........................)

and thats about all i care to type for yall right now.

Get a schlage or yale cylinder. ABUS or lockwood are good locks too. Avoid padlocks and anything not easily rekeyable for now. Also avoid those entrance knobset things as I've heard that their insides are sometimes made of plastic.
