A cell phone. Well ok its an American lock 5260 and first question is what is the keyhole somewhat blocked by this little metal piece which i think is there to stop u from using the tension wrench and also what way do you turn the lock clockwise or counter clockwise
clockwise. and that metal peice actually just holds the cylinder in the padlock housing.
also check this out it might help your brain a bit. viewtopic.php?t=16962

The "little piece of metal" is acually to hold the cylinder in. when you get the lock open, there will be a set screww that once loosened the plate will be able to be removed and the cylinder will come out.
this lock is re-keyable so you could have a pile of cylinders and change them out.

There is likely to be some spools or some kind of security pin so it will need a different kind of tention than the plain lock like Kwickset. What I am trying to say is that you gotta get a feel for it. The amount of tention varies depending on where I am in the process. When you feel the spools make the cylinder turn back, you gotta' let up on the tention.

If you click the search button and type in "spools" you will get 635 results. The first page of the first result features a beautiful color picture of a couple of them.

I don't remember who made it but I have a avi file that shows exacly what a spool does. I don't want to step on anyones toes and just send it, but if anyone knows where on this board the "animation4.avi" is... I couldn't find it. I usually download these kinds of thinks so I don't have to look for them. I do have it on my website for my own use (not linked and you have to know where to find it) I don't know if it would be alreight to distribute without permission. I think I found it in a prior thread about security pins.

and i know it has already been said but i think it bears repeating. americans are very difficult locks to pick, this is NOT a good lock to learn from. you will simply get frustrated and want to throw it.... and if your anything like me, you have already thrown it at least once.

Close but the one I was thinking about actually shows the spool as it progresses to the picked position. Man I wish I could just link it but I don't know where I got it.
Aww heck, I'll just link the copy and if a mod thinks it shouldn't be here then please remove or delete the link.

If someone knows where the original is, could we fix the link so it points to it. I want credit to go where it is due.

in order to disassemble the lock you have to be able to open the shackle, which you cant do unless you can pick it or have a key. the holes around the case of the lock are for drainage so if you use it outdoors and it rains, water wont freeze inside the lock.

Well for that my friend I am afraid I will have to default to "Wax on - Wax off" Practice. It took me forever to get it and all the advice in the world couldn't help without going through the motions. I really don't mean to be a kill joy, but that is all I can say. You don't go IFR without first learning the basics of flight. And finally, "The Ox are slow, But the earth is patient..." Now go get some chopsticks and learn to rekey a lockusing only the chopsticks. then you can do anything. Blah Blah. . .
