What kind of deadbolt should I buy?

What kind of deadbolt should I buy?

Postby stonee » 7 Jan 2007 6:47

Hi,

I have reason to believe that when I'm not home people come into my apartment. Unless I get a better lock, I can't find a way of stopping them.

With this said, what kind of deadbolt can I buy that is pick proof? What about resistant to drilling? Bumping? What do you think of keyless deadbolts that use a code?

I've read posts here before that recommend speaking to your locksmith. However, they say such a lock doesn't exist. Moreover I've read articles of this site that say if you don't have a metal door, windows have bars, etc. expensive locks are not worth it.

I think otherwise. At least if they break the door down I'll have a sign of entry and I can call the police.

I have been looking at some Abloy locks. Can you guys please make some recommendations on some deadbolts that will give me peace of mind? Specific locks would be very helpful.

Thanks!

yeah abloy are good for all of the above, except for the paranoia the only way to help that is by covering your walls in tinfoil

Thanks for the response I appreciate it.

I'm in the process of setting up a security system at home. I am going to be running a linux system with some cameras.

Check out these pages:

http://www.lavrsen.dk/twiki/bin/view/Motion/WebHome

Motion is a software package that when connected to a camera can detect changes and will record them to your computer. I am using these cameras:

The one I have is the day and night cam.

What do you think of this security system? Or where you thinking of something like ADT?

well cameras are only good to review events unless there is a person monitoring them at all times. If you have genuine concern that someone is accessing your dwelling whist you are out (and only when you are out) things you must consider are as follows:
You are being monitored: change your habits.
A monitored Alarm system will notify you as soon as someone enters said dwelling
Cameras, although good for retroactively identifying an intruder, they will not stop them nor give you realtime alerts.
Why is this person(s) entering.
Start thinking about counterintelligence.
Look for the constant, is there a common element that you see before one of these enterings
Is it someone you know, have you confronted them
Have you contacted the authorities
Setup a secure marking system to identify if a person has entered (PM for Ideas)
Have you changed locks since you moved in or someone else moved out

There are thousands of things you can do, if this is just random B+E you are worried about then most of what I've said doesn't apply. If someone kicks your door down after you change your locks and you have CCTV of it what will this accomplish, unless you know the intruder. The police will do very little with video evidence of a suppossed crime versus catching the criminal in the act....
Just for you to consider

what kind of lock you looking at?

abloy RI001, is there rim lock, wich is good and with the snib it deadlocks,

then i guess you can have any keyway you like but tbh even exec no one is going to pick :)

but yeah jus set up a alarm, an i guess get someone to wait at your neighbours and you leave and when set of your mate could ring you and you both return and comfront them...

or if you just moved in or someone moved out just change your cylinder, or get a lever pack if you got a mortice lock.

I think that people coming into my room are very sophisticated. They will come in when I am at work. There is no way I can make it home when they come (when I am at work). I'll have to work something out with my neighbor where they call the police.

What makes you think someone is coming into your place and why would they? How do you think they're doing it? There are alarms on the market that will call you on your cell phone if someone trips the alarm while you are out. They are very inexpensive and reliable.

The locks I am thinking of getting are:

- $169.00 Abloy Single Cylinder: ABL-DB1 (http://www.bayarealocks.com/product_inf ... ucts_id=28)
- $139.00 Medico Maxum Single Cylinder MED-MX1 (http://www.bayarealocks.com/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=32[)

I don't know what else to buy. People have mentioned the Schlage Primus.

I'm also considering this lock because it is advertised as being bump resistant.

- $79 BiLock D9 Single Thumbturn (http://www.bayarealocks.com/product_inf ... ucts_id=30)

However I'm cautious to purchase the lock because it doesn't mention about its lock picking protection.

I believe people are coming into my home because when I come back from being at home I find items in other places than where I placed them.

Although this might sound weird, at times when I am in public places where there is a lot of people I heard random voices talking about details of my life that no one would know unless they where inside my apartment.

I know it sounds crazy, but if they did it to you then you wouldn't be so crazy. I have reason to believe it is the people at my job.

Maybe things are different in Canada? :)

In a word? MEDECO

It's a better choice that abloy in the U.S., in general, because there's about 50 times more medeco than abloy dealers so it's much easier to get service for Medeco stuff.

Oh, and the above post about it being a copied key is probably correct--this is about 10 times more likely than any other explanation like picking or some other bypass technique. Of course, Medeco would still be an excellent solution due to it's outstanding key copy protection system.
