Newbie with a Dyno Kwick Pick and a Schalge office door lock

Postby tenover » 8 Jan 2007 22:08

I got hooked (in a big way) this past month in lockpicking. I'm just in it as a hobby, nothing more, nothing less. After reading posts on here, I made some picks out of some random household stuff and had luck picking a couple padlocks that I bought. I was able to scrounge up a couple Schlage cylinders from my office (I'm the office manager) and took them home. I modified one so I could see the inner workings, and could pick 1, 2, and three pins with my picks without any problems. I just received this Dno Kwick Pick in the mail, and I've been trying to pick the lock that I haven't modified with no luck...Just wondering if it's possible, or maybe I just need to work on my technique?? It's just a 5-pin cylinder without any "special" pins..... Ideas? Suggestions? Thanks, and this is a GREAT site....

I would suggest either making yourself, or buying either/or a half diamond or hook pick. The most reliable way to pick is by single pin picking. the method you are using is what is known as "raking" or "scrubbing". Another thing, all pin tumbler locks can be compromised, some just take more experience and knowledge than others. The method that I use when raking is to do a kind of circular motion in and out of the lock, while varying the tension according to the pressure of the pins. Other techniques may work, but I find this one to work the best. Also, try searching the site for any answers by using the search function in the top right corner of the site. And again, try getting your hands on a half diamond or hook pick, and just keep doing what you are doing. Good job on just starting out, and you can find a video of pickmaking by pyro. http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?t=2465
Good luck! 8)

Thanks for your help, I'll keep at it. the raking method seems like a "shot in the dark" kinda thing, no? I like listening/feeling for the single pins, that seems like half the fun....

That is a good way of looking at it. The Dyno Kwickpick rake works well on certain kinds of locks, like Kwicksets and some padlocks but even then it depends on other factors (like variations in the lengths of the pins in the lock). Raking won't get you very far but pin picking will. Good luck :-)
