Abloy Removed on the Vending Machines

Postby David_Parker » 26 Apr 2004 23:32

So I'm cruising down the hallway of my school today, and I notice the T-Bar Abloy is missing. This puzzles me because, well, its a coke-machine, and its standing wide open. Nobody seems to mind though.

Voiding myself from ignorance, I decide to take a gander at the lock and find that the cylinder is missing, but not the T-Bar...you know, the threaded spike that pokes in the back of the door? And I'm wondering how this is possible, and why would anyone do a thing?

...ps, I was somewhat confused as towards where I should post this....its sort of a Got Questions, but it relates to a specific lock...mods can decide :)

My guess would be the coke vendor or a locksmith was in the middle of replacing the cylinder and had to go to the truck or got called away for a little while. If its still like that tomorrow, Id let somebody know in case they dont already. I find it odd that a student would have the time and access to do that kind of work(removing the lock cylinder) during school hours without getting caught. Im betting it was in the midst of being worked on.

But a coke machine, would someone take grinder to it? Really, not that much money in one, is there?

there cant be muxh more money than $100 in there, the locks prbly worth more than the money inside! They sure do lock up vending machines good, One I saw had 2 high security padlocks, next to it had an abloy cylinder

I want the locks not the money!!! (Although, the money always helps  )

It depends where the machine is located... there are a few around here without any added protection (than the actual lock on the machine itself). If people are willing to break into cars for petty cash, I don't see why they wouldn't take more force against a machine with a little more cash. To me it's just not worth it, but apparently to some it is! 8)

true, I am not a criminal, and so I suppose you have to look through their eyes. My mate had his car broken into, a crap as laser, and all they stole was $10 bucks in $2 coins. Crazy.

A friend of mine had literally only pennies in the cup holder. He had a rock thrown through his window and nothing else was stolen... not any of his expensive car parts that he "upgraded" - only the pennies. Boy was he ever pissed off. :(

i see missing locks all the time and it would not be open if a locksmith had been replacing the cylinder he/she would of closed it somehow.

It depends if their is still coke and money in the machine. If the company that owns the machine took the lock off i bet they would have removed their profit and products out of the machine.

Most soft drink distributors(who own vending machines), service the refrigeration as well as the electric and locks. For all the machines they own it is more cost effective that way. A locksmith probably wouldnt just leave money and product unsecured, but nothing is for certain. We arent even sure why this happened. David, did you find anything out?

Who knows what some vending machine companies do. I once saw a pepsi machine "secured" with an aftermarket hasp welded rather poorly and a Master number 1.
