I'll put it simply too....no.
The wafers in a wafer lock are contained in the plug, as are the springs - no need for a plug follower. If you have the key, great, but if not you'll have to pick it before withdrawing the plug - do this very carefully and place your fingers above the wafers, otherwise you'll have wafers and springs flying everywhere. This is most important when removing the plug from a double wafer lock - place fingers above and below the wafers.
If the key is in the plug, everything will be held in place when withdrawing, but be careful not to pull on the key itself.

If it ain't broke.....pull it down and see how it works anyway!
