Dual plugged Yale Cylinder

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Dual plugged Yale Cylinder

Postby I Pik U » 16 Oct 2006 21:28

This is a Yale cylinder we have in the shop. One plug is a VA keyway and the other GA. Either plug with the right working key can turn the cam on the back.

I believe one only opens the lock and one only closes the lock, kind of like Abloy shopkeeper's system.

The Yale Bicentric is a mastering system like the Corbin master ring. The top plug (mounted upside down) is usually the master. The upshot of the system is that you can have a totally separate keyway for the master key, allowing a much more complicated master key system and absolute protection against an adversary modifying a change key to make a master key.

From the photos (and thanks for posting them) it looks like the cams might operate separately - one tied to the lower cylinder and the other tied by gears to the upper cylinder. Do they both turn together or just one at a time?

Sorry Shrub, not for sale.
Either key will lock or unlock the door.
Only one cam turns at a time. They're both moved in the last pic because both keys are in it.
As far as a breakdown pic, it's similar to any other pin tumbler cylinder, except there are two rows of top pins, one for each plug. And they're on an angle instead of at 12 O'clock as in a normal cylinder.

Ah, I've never seen a bicentric mortise cylinder before. I thought they were only in knobs.

Eric nailed it, its an old masterkey system, so old that I have never seen it still in use, and the one or two cylinders that I have seen were very worn. but the poster from nova scotia seems to have seen one at the game that was still part of an active system.

About this lock, each cylinder has 6 pins and I see in the picture it is open on both, my question about whether she is open to just turn one at a time? but what about this brand padlocks also anyone has had any experience in opening?
