I am really new to this and need advice on how to get started with zero knowledge on this topic. This is really a cool site and it looks like there is a lot to learn and share, but can someone focus where I should start and how?
I'm wanting to do this so I can understand from a home security point of view how good my locks are and can they be bumped etc.,? I happen to run across a video by accident on bumping locks and it lead me to this site....now I need to understand how to get started....

thanks

Welcome everybody,
For all thoes new to the site and lockpicking, LP101 is a great place to start.
Take a look at the new users section, first and don't be afraid to ask any questions just remember to try a search before posting. Cause everyone should HYSF as well as there Pick-fu.

If you're looking for locks to pick, buy some but, DO NOT PICK LOCKS YOU OR ANYONE ELSE RELY ON
I repeat DO NOT PICK LOCKS YOU OR ANYONE ELSE RELY ON, they can and will break, then your house/car/safe/chasity belt is vulnerable or unable to be opened (think: emergency situation).
Keep it legal.
Cheers,

first off welcome to the mad house

Its interesting that you are interested in home security rather than the skill of lock picking. but that makes no odes really. as for bumping most locks can be bumped to a degree but it would be irresponsible to go in to details about which are easy, the flaws and way round each lock.

Start of by reading through this site and SEARCHING for what aspect interests you. just about every aspect of bumping has been covered down to refining bump keys and ideas on methods to prevent it.

But this is a PICKING site not a bumping site, bypass methods are generally restricted to advanced forums. people will be happy to give you advice on what locks will suit u best but please fill in your location so we can help u better.

Not too much I can say, but read the links listed above, and don't rely to much on the youtube videos, they go really fast and not to much closeup work. You need the white papers written on this site.
Get you self a stainless steel part from a windshield wiper blade and make a tension wrench. Then make a 1/2 diamond pick out of the same material. This will work good for a kwikset or a No 3 master padlock. Paly with these picking one pin at a time. You'll gain confidence do this. Then graduate to different types of locks
Good Luck

from a home security view

Postby raimundo » 17 Jan 2007 13:13

from a home security view, I would estimate that your house locks are cheap crap, I get this because you live in the midwest, where its generally true, locksmiths did not even start selling high security locks here until recently. If the house was recent built by a developer, he probably tried to spend less than 20 bucks on each lock and yours may be very similiar to the neighbors on the left and right.

HAH, I was totally about to say the same thing. I've noticed whole neighborhoods full of Quiksets and crap Slages. Ahh, the false sense of security that most of suburbia has.. ahh.

hey raimundo,

I wonder how many general contractors who build entire streets of let's say 10 houses order 20 deadbolts KA (keyed alike- for the noobs) and the neighbors never notice until someone coming home drunk manages to unlock the next door neighbor's house and crashes on their couch or gets a shotgun in the stomach by accident.

ps. to the original poster, my first experience with how lock picking actually works was HowStuffWorks.com click the green dots, they animate the lock diagrams. =)
