Automotive feeler gauge pick

I was reading "Improvised Lock Picks (Police Guide To Lock Picking) - Jelly"

They were saying you could make lock picks out of a automotive feeler gauge. Would any of you say NO to that??

If yes does anyone have any quick tips or temples I could print out and use???

In making a pick it looks like the diamond pick would be the best tool. Is this so??

its a mater of opinion. i prefer hooks and someone else might like rakes. i would a make a variety of picks and learn which one suites you

Any idea on a Tension Wrench other then Street Sweeper Bristles.

A nail will work, bu the best suggestion would be made by the pirate SFGOON , and use some windshield wiper inserts.

You will find two strips of stainless in them which make wonderful tension wrenches and do not need much, if any at all modifying to them. You can pick them up in two different widths pretty cheap at Wal-Mart or check the local parts store and ask them if they have any that they are going to throw out.

they are great material for picks, I actually just made a set using them, its got 5 picks, and i cut off about half of the bolt that secures the pack, and I use that to hold em together. It's kinda like a jackknife set, but you still get all the feedback as you would a regular set.

I made a set using autofeeler guages the drawback I had was I couldn't use some of the really thin one in my set. I have seen the newer autofeeler guages have a bolt to take them apart so you could remove the unwanted thicknesses. I will upload a picture of the one I made 3 years ago, The only drawback I have is it is a little harder to use because of the way it folds up.

why not just remove the outer case and leave only the picks, then run the bold through the holes in the picks, like i did

About wiper stock, you should be aware that this comes in variations, just go to the local mechanics and ask what he has in his scrap bin, take them all and you will probably see the differences. some are quite narrow and others are at least twice as wide. Don't judge this material by the first piece you find, theres a lot of different ones, and all are useful in one or another application.

well, unfo, not all of us regard feeler gauges as strictly automotive, and for those who want to use a particular thickness of steel, go to the jobber that sells tool bits to machinests, tell him the thickness you want, (.020" .025" I recomend.) you can buy a single piece or a box of them fairly cheap.

Was that a joke? Seriously, the original poster clearly stated that he wanted to use the 'feeler gauges' that you use for measuring the distance regarding a spark plugs as pick making medium. There was no question abou8t automotive locks I'm afraid.

Those picks look they desperately need a bit of sanding and polishing, but other than that they are cool.
