What locks requires the closest tolerance key cuts?

Postby WOT » 21 Jan 2007 0:04

What locks that takes standard cut keys requires the closest cut tolerance? By standard cut, I am talking about standard, straight depth cuts and not Assa, Abloy, Miwa etc dimple keys or Medeco.

Best A2 has 9 cuts in the increments of 1/80" and acceptable calibration tolerance for the code machine is +/- 1/1000". Often time Best keys duplicated on my standard rotary duplicator don't work smoothly and I find myself having to adjust the key machine to cut slightly shallower than the original, then go back and manually file to closest code cut spec using a caliper.

Is there any standard, straight cut keys that requires even higher tolerance and is Best pretty close to being something requiring among the highest accuracy?

Best by design has the tightest tolerances that I know of in a pin tumbler lock.

Sargeant locks also have really tight tolerances.

As far as cut depth increments, I looked at Sargent specs. It has ten cut depth in increments of 1/50".

Best SFIC: 10 cuts in increments of 1/80". My caliper is accurate to 1/1000" and you want a measurement instrument with at least ten times the resolution of what you're measuring, so it's so precise it's nearly pushing the limits of my digital caliper's resolution.

Kwikset 0.023 or almost 1/40". Seven cuts.
