Is there a chemical that will strip off color from LAB pins?

Postby WOT » 21 Jan 2007 16:06

Best pins are way too expensive. Lab pin sets are quite inexpensive, but they came up with the most retarded idea of COLORED pins.

Now, anyone with an idea of what the color of pins mean and a periscope can get a key made for it. Is there a chemical that will strip off the color without damaging the metal?

LAB should offer an OEM best pin. These will NOT be color coded if they follow the same rules they do with schlage, kwikset, etc OEM pins. They are a slight bit higher per 100 though.

I am not sure what will strip the color off without damaging the pins. You could try a very light, less than 1% lye solution. It may take it off or it may leave you with a blob that was once a pin. Look for powdered drain opener such as drano brand. Mix half a teaspoon or so with a quart of water. I am not 100% sure off the top of my head so you'd better look but in this case you should add powder to the water and not water to the powder to be safest. Rinse well to ensure the solution is neutralized/removed. Let you first batch sit overnight if it does strip the color off to see if it is going to grow any scale, etc on the brass.

Let us know if it works out for you.

Colored pins make them easy to separate.

I've never seen anyone use a periscope for scoping a lock before :)

Just save some $$$ and buy OE pins.

I think colored pins are fine and makes decoding easier and they're acceptable except for bottom pins.

Anyone scoping a 6 or 7 pin best core can have a key!!!!!!!!!!you could spend so long trying to read past 3rd chamber in thin best keyways good luck . colored pins are for your ease and sorting. paint remover/thinner should do it but strain and rinse them well. plus you will be adding moisture to your kit it probably wont do anything but ALL of my kits are perfect aand I wouldnt think of it.
Plus, in standard cores it could always be .003 or.005 and most of the colors are different. any locksmith could pick a core out in a minute. BUY OEM KIT.
I have 2 .003 one .005 three corbin and a best.thats good for me I borrow a sargent when i have more than one or two to do.
