Where can I get high quality depth keys?

Postby WOT » 26 Jan 2007 8:17

I got a set of Best A3 depth keys from an eBay seller wp3gi
http://myworld.ebay.com/wp3gi/, because I couldn't find any other source. It cost me almost $20.

The problem is that some of them are out of tolerance in my opinion.

Best A3 has a bottom to valley height of 0.3187" at 0 cut and decreases in the increment of 0.018"and goes up to 7. The seller says he uses the original Best code punch. It's calibration procedure calls for "calibration cut" key's to be within a 1/1000" of spec.

Factory spec for deepest/6th depth key is 0.2107". The one he sold me is 0.2035, or out of tolerance by 7.2 mils. You'll get a way with it on a change key, albeit slightly clicky, but reference error accumulates onto copy.

Where can I get Best A3 depth keys made for a reasonable price and a promise of being within a thousandth of an inch from factory specs?

To be completely blunt, you probably wont find any.

A3 is a funked up system that not many people deal with enough to have a punch for. Those that do are typically institutional 'smiths. I can promise that their machines are close enough so the keys don't catch or pop when turned.

If the keys were punched (should be able to look at them and tell) and they are that close, then just adjust your duplicator up a little and make a copy. That will compensate for the difference.
