FB Master Keying Specialty Course

Postby jitter » 20 Nov 2006 15:10

I was just wondering if anybody has taken the foley-belsaw master keying specialty course and what they thought of it.

It shows that it is 299.00 but you can get it for 149.00 if you just ask them.

Thanks for your opinion.......

Although I have never seen the FB master keying course, I find it difficult to believe that it is more comprehensive than the Online course put out by IR for free.
http://everestprimus.schlage.com/essentials/home.htm .. it is product specific, but the essentials are there .
Both IR and Medeco also have “Traveling Classes”. You may want to contact the factories to find when they will be in your area.

I did the masterkeying course from FB about 10 years ago when I was growing my business. It does cover the basics as far as how a master key system works and explains the procedures for finding ghost keys. It also teaches how to write a solid masterkey system with or without cross keying.

Any sort of training you can get to learn something new is worth while. You might think that you will never use it, but one day it will pop up and at least you will have some familiarity with it and understand the basic principals involved.

So far I like the course the following is an outline of the course subject matter. They do not provide any hands on which is a bummer but if you have your own stuff it does not matter.

1. The Language of Masterkeying
2. Masterkeying - What is it?
3. Creating master key systems, Level Two
4. Creating Grand Master Key Systems, Level Three
5. Great Grand Master Key Systems, Level Four
6. Great Great Grand Master Key Systems, Level 5
Exam

7. Single Increment Progression
8. Checking Your Systems
9. Masterkeying, The Planned Destrucdtion of Security
10. Sub-Master Keys, What are they and How are They Created
11. Modifying a Standard Progression to Obtain Additional Bittings
12. Obtaining Change Keys Under the Grand Master Key
13. Rotating Constant Progression
14. Chain Keying
15. Obtaining Addional Bittings from an Exhausted System
Exam

16. Decoding a Master Key System
17. Cross Keying (Keyed Common)
18. Management and Maintenance of Master Key Systems
19. Single increment System for Schlage
20. Dexter Single Increment System
21. Masterkeying Best Type Interchangeable Cores
22. Masterkeying Sargent Interchangeable Cores
23. Masterkeying Corbin-Russwin Interchangeable Cores
24. Masterkeying Corbin-Russwin Master Ring Cylinders
25. Masterkeying Schlage Interchangeable Cores
26. Masterkeying Medico Interchangeable Cores
Exam

They give you ample forms for setting up systems.

So far I have completed 1-6 and they have been really easy to understand. It gave me enough that I set up my own grandmaster setup. I used 2 locks for each group with 4 groups total. Each group had a single master for two groups per master. After that I created a grand master key that opened them all. It was a good time.

So far I am very pleased except they do not provide any hands on training. But like I said you probably have enough items you can do projects your self.

I will keep you up to date as I progress through the the next lessons.

Hope somebody finds this useful

I got a book, I'll have to look up where I found it, but it's called "Master key system Specification, Application and Management". It doesn't deal with creating the system, but everything else that's needed to plan and maintain it.

I have limited knowledge of setting up master key systems.

If you're interested, I'll trade you my book for yours...
