u have to remember i live in a country where u CANT own a hand gun and being caught with a knife over 3 inches is a good enough excuse to give u a criminal record. butterfly/flick/gravity knives are jail time. shot guns cant hold more than 3 rounds. bolt action riles are limited to 3 or 5. even some air pistols are good enough for jail time.

well firstly i was born here and like it. secondly there is more to life than owning a gun, anyone that decides where to live based on fire arm laws really shouldn't be allowed to own a gun.

As for mr Franklin... Yes there is a lot to be said for the safety of owning a gun but isn't there some devastating figure about people being shot with there own gun. Plus im FAR less lightly to get gunned down in a street or in a school. its to easy go get guns there

Knives... A 3 inch blade would be long enough if you have a basic understanding on the human anatomy, and which parts don't need to be cut deeply to cause serious problems...

Butterfly knives etc... There is no way I'd believe that you have any use for it other than stabbing someone - the way the blades are made lends itself to cutting flesh in particular, and you would ruin them cutting anything else.

Clever guy Mr. Franklin... It is a pity that the people who really stand up for rights are viewed as being uncool... Activists are hippies, and anybody who objects to things out of principal is often seen as being mentally dangerous.

I would say that I follow Mr. Franklin's quote, but I am far too happy being trendy and cool, to run the risk of being criticised for speaking out what I believe in. Being a 'granola eating, hippy' really puts a dent in your social life, so why bother trying to fight something that is viewed as being the 'norm'? That makes you 'not normal' - why the heck would anybody want to be like that?

I sometimes think such quotes were written in the full knowledge that they would be flaunted and torn to shreds, just to prove what silly people we all are.

Well I really don't care much about smoking - being an athlete, I will be very happy when smoking gets banned.

I don't like fireworks much - they pollute the environment massively, and can be dangerous in the wrong hands.

None of this gives me a second of pause, and hey, my rights get reduced every day - at least this time I get what I want in the process.

I agree, the UK it getting worse and becoming a nanny state. but what can we do. I lost my 'legal' firearms through the 'ban' although gun crime and killings is on the up.... what's that all about!! Taking hand guns of the responsible people is all it did, the gangs can still get them.

Oh yer I also hate smoking, but still feel strongly that if someone wants to smoke its their choice and they shouldn't be stopped. Just have smoking / none smoking areas like we have now.

As for the smoking ban, i agree there are areas its not suitable. but if u don't like the smoke in bars DON'T GO IN BARS. the same as if u don't like alcohol or the effects it has on some people.

The first comment wasn't hostile, and the last bit was mostly a joke - I don't want to carry round sharpened screwdrivers.

The second part really wasn't about you at all - I was just expanding upon the quote you used.

The third wasn't an attack either. There are so many things that I am not allowed to do and nobody seems to care a whole lot, so I guess I was saying that it's good when a freedom encroaching law that is beneficial towards my interest comes my way.

I tend to speak my mind a lot - if you had offended me, it would have been clear - I do apologise for appearing hostile, it wasn't my intent. If I have a thought regarding a subject, I tend to express it without inhibition - I really don't like shifting around a subject tbh.

Why people would want to smoke totally baffles me!
I mean you get lung cancer, waste money, stink of tobacco, and are constantly under its effects. I guess it does have some aspects of socialising in it, but surely there are other ways?
I guess I'm missing something huge that makes people even start smoking ... I have no idea why you would want to - I fail to see the beneficial effects...

As for smoking personally i started smoking in clubs as a social thing when i was about 16 because i liked it and it relaxes me. and then uve got them on u and u feel like one when ur waiting for a bus and it all creeps up on you.

I have no plans to give up but in retrospect i should never have started. although i do like the smell of tobacco. But even if i didn't smoke i don't think they should stop people doing it in bars. the same as i don't do any drugs but i see no reason people shouldn't be able to smoke weed in the privacy of there own home

Nice suggestions Varjeal. The most sensible solution is a motion-activated light. I hate to seem pretentious (in actuality it would be hard even if I tried as a first year law student I know practically nothing).

All jokes aside:
The use of lethal force is never justified in the defense of property (there is the exception if you are in fresh pursuit, but this only allows for reasonable force for the purpose of getting your stuff back, not retaliating(see Hodgeden v. Hubbard)). Setting a mechanical device that injures another will get you into a lot of trouble. If you cannot do it in person, you cannot do it through a device. And a device is worse, because it lacks discretion. In person there is always the possibility that you might find force unnecessary. (see Katko v. Briney., People v. Ceballos)

One more thing: Another reason, for the courts being so adamantly against lethal mechanical devices is that neighborhood kids, or emergency workers might inadvertently stumble onto your creations.
