A while back, I kept a kind of picking diary, as a kind of semi-scientific experiment, to address the efficacy of raking. I logged 52 lockout calls, in my dayfinder, with the intention of begining each pick session with two minutes of raking, prior to manually picking, or using a pick gun.
You may be surprised at my results, and I challenge the rest of you to compare my results with what you find out there in the real world.
The notes exist to this day, on a 51/2 x 8 1/2 day runner graph paper, begining with:
*YALE RIM RAKE top of keyway (refering to tension wrench placement) 3 seconds.
* WEISER kik RAKE 3 SECONDS
UNKNOWN MORTISE Couple of minutes
and on down the line, and continued on the back page. I marked each lockout coming in under a 30-second success rate, with an asterik symbol.
This may come as a shock to many of you...
33 out of the 52 locks opened in under 30 seconds.
I'm dead serious.
I'm not bragging.
I'm not fudging the results.
Nor am I claiming to be any kind of lock genius, or super-raking scientist.
These are the data:
In total, 22 of the 33 opened up in under ten seconds.
11 of the 33 opened in under 5 seconds.
3 of the 33 in one second.

What do you guys think of 5 pin residential lock security now?

Not bad at all, normally i get the same results with a lock, either you get it in under 30 seconds, or it takes you a couple minutes (counting the time you wasted raking). Normally if i cant get it open in under a minute, then i go to SPP, which takes about a minute or two more, winding up to about 2-3 minutes. Then you have the slightly harder locks, with cuts set at high-low combinations, or other picking restraints, which can take as much as 10 minutes, its a good thing not many are like this though :D

As for the 1 second ones, good job man, i usually have to "know" a lock before i can do that. :x

damaged?

Postby raimundo » 25 Feb 2007 12:01

whats the damage from, force? or have you just dropped a masterpin into the bottom of the keyway when it was 180 turned with nothing filling the keyway? this is the most likely damage if you live in a building with master keying, (rental building) There was also a thread on someone who damaged a padlock by as he said, picking it 600 times, this could be simple need of lubrication, or he may have chipped away the keyway until the dust of brass just jammed up the lock.

I think a damaged by picking thread with photos and forensic examination would be a good thread, showing pins and plugs that have been eroded by forceful pick use. or pins that were hammered by electropicks. there is a lot to learn from someone elses mistakes, so you can avoid making them yourself.
