I used to drive an A-2 series Volkswagen GTI that had the same vulnerability. I was able to purchase door handles with a protective plate that would seriously complicate any attempts at that method of entry. Look into that.

If you want to find out how the entry was completed, take the inner panel off your door so you can see how the insides work. Unless you're a moron, it will be abundantly clear how this was accomplished.
