yet another post about bump resistant pins

Postby linty » 5 Feb 2007 19:46

i was reading in locksmith ledger that lab has or is developing a grooved pin that doesn't move vertically when the plug is under tension, which could be used as an anti-bump pin. the reference was very vague but i was wondering if anybody has any info on these?

Sounds to me like serrated pins, but none of these options are really all that effective. The fact is that you needn't apply tension before the actual strike. Though it does usually make bumping easier, it isn't necessary. And if you're not tensioning, no shape of pin will have any bearing on the matter.

this was an issue from 2006 and they said they were still in development, so i don't think it's simply serrated pins, although it could very well be a slight variation on them.

i'll try to remember to photocopy the reference and post it here, but they really didn't say much else other than that lab was working on something and they'll let us know if anything comes of it.

If it doesnt move veritcally when the plug is under tension wouldnt it be pick resistant also?

Resistant? Probably. Unpickable? Probably not.

Yeah, I'm quite curious about this too. It seems like it's something designed solely to prevent bump keys from moving the pin up and down. But the principles that allow a bump key to work are very similar to that which picks, or more specifically pick guns use. So this makes me wonder, why is this coming around now? If they've invented a pin that is harder (I doubt it's impossible) for a bump key to move up and down, then why wasn't it invented earlier, because surely, it would add difficulty to picks moving it up and down too.
