Exactly, and when I said exagerated about the master 140 I was refering to the movement being more noticable on a false set pin with this particular lock, than on a better made cylinder.

mm help

Postby Project » 5 May 2004 20:29

im picking this masterlock 930 and i got a bit of trouble. The first binding pin is the first pin. So when i pick it, the whole lock rotates like 1-3 degrees. Now did i actually pick the pin, or did i fall into the spool trap?

Sounds like a spool, but check for yourself. Can you raise any of the other pins?

project: do you know how to tell a pin is spool or not?

the typical sign is the spool pin will push your tension wrench back when you push it.

use lighter pressure when you are pushing a spool pin until you hear click...

actually, i alwasy think it's hard to tell people how to pick a 5 spool pins...you got to try by yourself again and again...while you are watching tv, movie, pooing...driving :) hope you can open it soon.

there is a Brinks' shrouded shackle padlock(got 6 spool pins), it's good to practice also. the click sound is so loud...you won't be able to miss it.

you can buy it in Wal-Mart for less than $10, nice&pretty lock and good price. the master no.930 is almost $20...

I thought the the brinks shrouded lock only had 3 spool pins in it but if it has 6, I do not feel so bad about not being able to open it, I have been working on it again for the past few nights, have had it for like 3 months. Still no luck, I can usually get 3 of the pins set good, but the others are false set. oh well. plus I do not like the bottom of the keyway on that lock. sometimes I just want to throw it against the wall. Then I remember I'm renting.

I've got a master lock with at least 1 spool pin it, as well as a brinks shrouded padlock. One thing I notice about trying to pick these locks it that the pins have very little resistance before picking them. It takes me forever just to find the pin that is giving off the most resistance. When the spool pin false sets and i try to find it to set it, I have the worst time. I can't find the one that makes my wrench move backwards for some reason, so i try to find the one thats not completely stuck.

Is there anything specific i should look for when trying to set the spool pin? A louder click, a sudden rigidity of tension again?
