Question: Abus 85/30 Padlock

Postby sixbladeknife » 8 Feb 2007 13:57

Hey Guys!

I've got an Abus 85/30 padlock and I'm courios about the following:

The lock itself has 4 pins, with one mushroom or spoolpin. (The last one)
So I thought the first 30 times I picked it. (manual, with lifter pick)
But suddenly I realized that I just have to set the first three pins to
open the lock. I don't even touch the last pin.

How can that be? has anyone experience with something like that?

And yes, Im sure the lock has 4 pins, at first I can hear it clearly and:
Abus 85/30 Classic Padlock Keyed Alike(Reference #A008530KA)

Hardened steel shackle.

Quality pin tumbler mechanism, Self locking mechanism. Lock dimensions :- Size 30 mm, Locking element pins 4, Shackle dia. 5 mm, Vertical shackle clearance 17 mm, Horizontal shackle clearance 18 mm.

Thanks for reading!

When you turn the plug to lock the cylinder are you sure all four pins reset?

hmm..
if the last pin would not reset, the spring could not force it up, but it surely does. If the bodypin was wedged, the springpower could not reach the plugpin...
Is it possible, that this pin is "set" in the highest position?
That I have not to set it additional :?

I dont know that model very well, but it could be that the 4th chamber is the deepest cut and the pin sits at the sheer line normally. this is not normal but some of the cheep forgein locks would do this. and possibly the 4th spring and driver are stuck in the bible from picking virtually making it a 3 pin. lube and wrap on it to see if it will drop and be under spring tension.
good luck.

rap it

rap the lock on a block of wood, then try to pick that, you may have a pin that could be stuck from the scratches on the sides of the pin and scratches in the sides of the drilling the pin collumn is in. Rapping would loosen this.
